need 2 external battery operated cooling fans that i can stick on both sides of my tank under the MH lighting strip so they face eachother and blow air across the top of the tank very important i ind this product anywhere fast i looked in home depot and target and lowes and local appliance stores and they did not have any small fans...please link me to where i can buy these fans or tell me where you purchased it from,,they dont sell this on this site so i think links are OK. it needs to be a bit less than 3" as 2.75" reaches the lighting...unless its rectangular.. it needs to be 2.5 or 3 inches and battery operated. please help my temp reached 84 and its not even summer yet...i need to save my corals.

batteries wont last long in that situation you might look into computer fans or even a couple clip on type fans from wal-mart thats what I used and clipped them to my canopy.
do you have glass tops on the tank?

I have a clip on (electric) fan on both my DT & QT. I am in florida and they work great. I don't have MH but my tank still gets warm. Since it is a clip on it doesn't have to fit under the lights. I clip it to the side of my tank and adjust the brackets so that it is blowing under my lights but is not fitting under my lights. $7.00 at walmarts.

Yeah, you'll have to change batteries every day. If you can use elec, there are all kinds of small clip-on fans available anywhere and they work great. Don't you use A/C in the summer? Outside temp won't effect your tanks unless you keep it hot inside. 84 is nothing to panic about, IMO.

Okay...I sent you a couple of PM's, but here goes...Here's a picture of what I bought:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=search
This says 3", but mine is a 4".
When you are looking at their computer cooling fans, make sure you get one like this that is "AC", not DC. If you get DC, then yes you will have to have a converter box (this is what I think you are callling a mother board, which it would be if you were using in a computer). A converter box would convert the DC power to AC so that you could plug it in.
But if you buy the one like I did, an AC, then just find you an old plug from a junk toaster, tv, radio, etc., cut off the plug and plenty of cord. Strip back the wires and connect them to the wires coming from this fan. Use some electrical tape to cover your splice connection, and I would also recommend using some heat/shrink wrap (just ask Radio Shack for it, or Home Depot or Lowes).
As far as mounting, I'm not sure what type of canopy you have. As you can see in the picture, this fan has a hole in all four corners of the plastic fan frame so that you can scre w it or bolt it to just about anything. I only needed one on my 55 QT tank, and it has MH lights, so yes they work. If your canopy is enclosed, then you want the fan on one end blowing across the lights/water with an escape on the other end. If your canopy is not enclosed, then just direct the fan straight at the water. This will cause more condensation, thus lowering your temperature.

With a tank already running at 84 degrees, with 100 corals, I'd highly suggest just buying a chiller.
I know I had a 10 inch fan running under my HQI's and it still got warm. I don't think 1 or 2 computer fans is going to be a reliable solution. Fans definitely help, but sounds like you have other heating issues as well.
How big of a canopy do you have on the tank?

i have a 8 inch fan running 24/7 in the sump...i got from some company in califorina a 6 fan attachment to the back of the tank that you can plug in it was $70 with shipping.
anyways thanks to all for the help.. i dont want to get a chiller because i dont have room for it and i dont think its necessary we have ac in every room in the house but the kitchen where the tank is we have a ceiling fan and some kitchen fans..i'm hoping with the smart fan i bought by coralvue that goes in the hood of the MH and the 8 " fan in the sump and the new 6 fans i got ill be OK the temp on a 80F day outside tops off at 83...now with all the additions ill get the desired level of 80F...even stable at 78F i think would be ok but my fish have been at 80F for a year. T316 gets the frag thanks to all he went the extra mile to help even though i couldnt really do it not his fault mine im sending him a smal frag in the future ill be doing this alot since myh corals are getting too big...and if ppl take the time to go the estra mile it will be appreciated and since i have some frags handy ill ship them out to you if you all pay the shipping.. in this case t316 gets it and the shipping is on me... thank to everyone and keep checking the threads for ways to get some free frags.

I agree with the above poster that 84F is nothing to panic about but with summer coming you'll need to do something. I purposely kept a tank at 86F for a year and it was one of the healthiest I've ever kept.
I don't think a computer fan has the airflow needed. Get a muffin fan from Radio Shack and move some air over the water surface to increase evaporation.

I have heard of that being done. I do notice my ricordeas seem to open fuller and grow a bit faster at higher temps but have always been afraid to keep them above 80F for too long. Do you have to compinsate for SG, ph, etc? My SG meter says it is temp adjusting but what about all else?

the temp was controlled for 2 years at 79F to 80F...using generic MH lamps...when i changed to Phoenix 14k's they were so powerful i would get shocked if i went into the tank with metal twezers...that is why i think thetemp some days goes from being a stable 79-80F to 83-84...now that i run the 8" fan all the time not just when the MH are on i think i solved the problem. i also ordered a plug in 6 fan sysytem..that should be more than enough to handle the summer. and that is how ihave 100 corals worth a good 10K...and am having issues for now...they have been addresed and fixed. for my own personal reasons i wont buy a chiller. thats that.

O2 is limited at higher temps so a LOT of waterflow and a good skimmer are important. Evap is accelerated so auto-topoff is nice, not critical though.
