Why didn't they "fill the gaps" when gas was $4.00 gal?

They were pumping all they could and still are. OPEC will order an across the board production cut to try to force the price back up. Some of these countries might go along with it but if the dollar falls and helps hold the price of oil down there are very few countries that wont look at increasing production.
Think about it, they have already went from a 4 month or so average of better than 130 a barrel to under 50 a barrel and how long was the price over 100?. The have already had their revenue sliced by more than half. Do you really think they can afford to cut production.

Our fuel surcharges are down $5.00 from the summer high and total shipping related charges are only $3.00 more than a year ago. This despite a 6% increase in FedEx charges and inbound air cargo charges up a ton over year ago. We don't make money on shipping charges, and I think if you look around we are the lowest out there of the reputable companies.

It's actually right on the FedEx site...I saw it when I was looking for a local place to hold the order I just placed. They are still charging SWF the fuel surcharge fee (which is BS) but SWF really has nothing to do with it. FedEx is gouging them or us actually. To be overnight shipping it is still very reasonable though.

Yea, but w/ prices that high, loads of ppl weren't buying gas. They were using public transportation, carpooling and stuff. The number of SUV purchase went down greatly, and hybrids went up. PPL wouldn't have started buying hybrids if gas wasn't so high.
Now that gas is back down, ppl start driving like they used to. Now we aren't worried about spending the extra gas, because it's so much cheaper. They may be making 1/2 price per barrel, but the demand is higher. I'm not saying their not losing any money, but probably not as much as you may think.

I'm not blaming SWF and buy no means am i incinuating that you are making a profit. You gotta do what you gotta do, and i don't expect YOU to pay OUR shipping.
I think the surcharges themselves are the rediculous part. The surcharge may be down $5 fromt the high, but the average, i don't think, was $18. I think it's still up from where it was majority of the time. What i was saying is that there shouldn't be any surcharge right now.
