Texans

Well, i sell heating products, and the weirdest conversation just occurred (for me at least).
There is some organization that is taking over some farmland in Texas, and turning it into Dome Housing. there will be 25 1000 sq foot units, 4 people max living in each unit, using radiant heat and hot water with centralized systems, and some type of heat recovery system powering most everything.
I asked him, jokingly, so what, is this some type of compound (branch davidian, etc) and he said yes....that's what most new construction is in Texas.
you guys don't get your own house with your own heater and heating/cooling systems? how cold does it get during the winter (need to know this for heatloss design)?

depends on where at in Texas. my old town near houston got about 40ish at the coldest during winter. the last time it snowed was almost 20 years ago and that was only enough for a small snowman. the new town in Texas fort hood i hear gets more snow and colder overall so far.

i think almost everybody has a/c heating systems in the house. even if they're not really used more than a few hours each day during the winter.

Here in central Texas, it gets below 20 a few days in the winter. Most of the winter it is 30 - 45.

that person is full of it... no most new construction is not compound type
most new construction is single family suburban housing. it does get cold in texas i can say that i am in the desert-west texas right at the bottom of the panhandle by new mexico i live in the permian basin which used to be a sea we are surrounded by the caprock(a sreies of small rocky hills that surrounded said sea) this keeps most (not all) inclimate weather away from us (tornadoes and such) but from halloween to easter we have many days that are 30ish at night and 60ish in the day with the occasional really cold day and maybe snow (the last snow we got this year was the day after tobins funeral) and the rest of the year it is not unusual to have 90 - 100+ days and 60-90ish at night it changes all the time - but no there are not alot of 'compounds' there are a handful of freaks the same as every state if you look you will find them

yea, the guy wanted a central heating system, which means everything would have to be close. but he also said each place was 1k sq ft, and compound like, so i was picturing a honeycomb like area.

my brother in law charlie lived in a dome house but it was a single occupancy type house, i saw a dome on hgtv that had many rooms ( kinda like a trivial pursuit game piece)they were all open at the top maybe thats what he means
still its weird

That's kind of wierd (OP), South Florida is hotter on average, and every new house has a/c/heat. Of course there aren't many 1000sq. ft. ones being built, but all the homes have heat. Perhaps because we turn the heat on at 55?

The real question is where in texas is he talking. Jenny lives up in the permian basin. Way up there it gets pretty cold several winter storms. In North Texas (DFW area) you are talking average lows in the upper 40's with two or three snow storms below freezing for 2 or 3 days straight. Go over to where San Angelo area near the other cult, it is more arid. Warmer days cooler nights, but far enough south where it really doesn't freeze. If you get down to the coastal areas. The average temperatures are in the lower 50's with the occational freeze once or twice a year. (Although the last few years it has been getting colder)
