The Pledge of Allegiance in schools

I'm just not sure why the school has to provide national allegiance and/or loyalty to g-d to a child. For all those upset that is has been taken out of school, have you required your children to make this pledge in your homes? Isn't it a parent's job to teach his/her children about religion/nationality/culture/allegiance/loyalty/etc.?

I don't like to get into the religious debates because no one ever wins, people just get angry, but the truth is that some people just don't feel comfortable saying that this is one nation under any God because we might not believe that any God has anything to do with it.
Yet God does, because had it not been for the issue of freedom of religion to begin with, many of our founding fathers would never have traveled here in the first place, and this country may have been very different. Fortunately for us, their foresight and rememberance of that issue provided us with the freedom to choose whether we would/should have a god or not. Like you I believe that lots of people, besides so called "god" fearing/following people have an excellent moral compass ~ in fact some moreso than many so called "christians". To me, its not an issue of God, so much as an issue of Country! If you fail to respect the flag, how can you respect what see represents, and if we don't respect what she represents (i.e. Freedom and love of country) what do we really have left and how long will we last?

Sure, and saying it in schools would only increase
their allegiance to the USA. How in the world is that a bad thing?
The g°d part withstanding (if you don't agree, just don't say the line, I'm sure you agree with the rest?)

Then by all means skip that part .
I just think to nix the whole thing because there is a refferance to god in it just shows how disposable our culture has become . We use everything else and throw it out when we have no use for it . Why not the pledge of aliegence to the flag ? The same flag that has hung over our nation in one fasion or another for over 200 years ?

I noted before that I'm fine with it if they take the "under god" part out.

My class says the pledge EVERY day. I have no problem shushing them if they try to keep their conversation going during it. Our school says it the way it was written. Every school that I know of around here does.

My take on it:
We've always had it in school. When we were younger (kindergarten/elementary school) we all said it. Now (in high school) people will always stand up and put their hand to their chest, but just about everyone remains silent as the pledge is read. As people get older they can make their own decisions. The teachers don't force anyone to say it, but most ask that people stand up. I consider it to be out of respect, same as singing the anthem at a sporting event.
I don't know why "under God" has become such a hot button issue lately. My parents' generation didn't have a problem with it, why now? If you don't want to say those two words, then don't say them.

We said it and my kids said it, I think it helps teach respect for the flag and the country. I get chills everytime I hear the national anthem played because I think of the ultimate sacrifice made by those who have fought to keep us safe. As far as saying God or not, I'll take my chances with saying it to acknowledge him in the presence of others rather than to answer to him as to why I did not......

Seriously . It doesn't say to which god . So I think if you don't believe in god then you should hve no problem just not reciting that line but honestly this country could use a little bit more in the morals department
.
hahah the morals you clearly lacked when not caring about innocent civilians dieing in Iraq..... then later trying to blame them for the war by calling them lazy...terrible. you should start by putting some morals in your life if you truly are part of the "human race"
.....

we're required to stand up and say the pledge, but ive done neither for the last 4 years. they really can't enforce it, i dont think they should be able to.

I'm not sure why the schools should be teaching certain alternative lifstyles are normal, an unproven theory about the orgin of the human race, reproductive functionality and a lot of other questionable subjects

Kinda surprised nobody mentioned (maybe I missed it) that "under you know who" was not originally in the pladge.
