The transfer is complete and here are my steps.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my posts about upgrading and transfering tanks. It took about 2 1/2 hours total. I was on a roll and worked as quick and carefully as possible. My husband helped a lot and my 2 1/2 year old son helped too. It worked out well and everyone is doing great tonight.
Swimming, eating, and moving sand(pistol shrimp).
Warning, a detail message on transfer. Pictures to follow if you don't want to read.
First I checked the tank for leaks through the night. When we started today we painted the back black first and let that dry. Meanwhile I mixed some new water and got my buckets ready. I was only moving to a 29gal from a 20 so it was not a huge endever as some I've seen. (Boy do I feel for those who have done big transfers).
Once the tank was dry and cleaned out with vinegar I started siphoning water from the old tank into the bucket for my fish and shrimp. I carefully removed the rock that I could get with no hitchikers and put them in one bucket with little to no water. The rocks I had critters on and couldn't get out or off I put in the bucket full of water for the fish. Once I got all of the rock out I cought all of my fish, even the six line, and put them in the bucket. I was amazed. Oh I forgot that I got as many crabs as I could and put them in a little tupaware bowl with tank water before I took the rock out.
While I was doing all of that my hubby put the new sand in the bottom of the new tank. We took down the old tank from the, obviously too big of a cabinet, cabinet, and put it on the old stand. Then put the new tank up. We scooped out the old sand and added it to the new sand. Then I used a huge plastic bowl and scooped out most of the water until we could lift the old tank and dump the rest. I added the new water, that was warm from sitting outstid, to the tank and hooked up the filter and skimmer. Once I did that I kept exchanging water from the buckets with the water from the fish tank about every 30 min's to keep the acclimation going throughout. I made sure the SG matched the old water. Once the water settled some I put the rock back. I let the dust settle until I could see enough to set the rock up. The whole time doing water exchanges with the buckets and the tank.
I tested the water and everything was great. PH 8.2, SG 1.024, sal-32, amm-0, nitrite-0, nitrate-0. So I added the crabs back, then the feather duster, then the fish, then the shrimp. I poured the remainder of the water from the buckets and then just waited until the dust settled. Everyone did really well. I left the lights off for about an hour. Didn't have a choice because my husband had to rig them up under the canopy and that took a while.
So there you have it. I hope this helps others. It was not bad. I will post how things are tomorrow but as of now I'm thrilled and just love the new set up. I have seen all fish and shrimp moving around. The crabs are non-stop. The green stars are coming out and so is the feather duster. Yea!! :jumping:

Ant everything looks great.
Now of course with a larger tank you will need to get some more rocks, fish, a coral or two then a bigger tank because it is a vicious cycle that will never end :hilarious . Sorry got carried away for a moment, good luck and keep us posted.

Everyone looks great this morning!! :jumping: One hermit crab got kicked out of his shell. I'm a little bummed about that. Once I got all of the shells back, from the pistol shrimps cave, I have all of these extra shells and the hermit crabs are going crazy with all of the shells. They're even fighting for eachother's shells. Really just the blue legged ones. The red legged crabs are off doing their own thing. All of the fish look great and are doing their usual stuff. Everyone ate this morning. OOOH, I'm so happy. :joy:
TAZ-you ain't kidding!! I love my new tank, even though I only went up 9 gal's. I'm already thinking about my next fish and of course I HAVE to get more rock. But I have time. After yesterday though, I'm not wanting a bigger tank...yet.

new readings: ph 8.0(dropped from 8.2), amm-0, nitrite-0, nitrate-0, SG-1.024, sal-33

I can't believe it, Ant...you're set up (tank and stand/canopy) is identical to mine, 'cept mine is a 37 gal set up. Looks really awesome, and I'm glad everything went well.
I got home from diving on Saturday and took a gander into the tank and saw a coral banded shrimp arm behind the rocks. Again...will I never learn...I got really bummed that I had lost Scampi until it dawned on me...he molted. I looked around a bit more and sure enough, there he was in his favorite rock. I was wondering why he wasn't front and center when I spot fed the bristles last week. Today he's out and about, looking a little transparent, but fine. I spot fed him tonight, and he's a happy camper.
Again, I'm really glad everything went well with your transition. To be honest, if I had a project like that staring at me, I'd be really nervous too. Congratulations!!!

No the stand and canopy are from the LFS...very nice set up. Looks like a quality piece of furniture (I have my tank right in the front room...so...)

If I remember correctly, the stand and canopy are made of solid oak. I have found it kinda hard to find something made of quality materials. Hmmmm...

Lisa-thanks for the support. Too funny about the stand and canopy. They are solid and my husband even likes them. He's very critical about that stuff. I'm really glad the transfer went well too. I fed them tonight and they are all happy. I am interested in getting a brittle star. What do you recomend?
Shiby-I found the stand and canopy on line. petsales@petsolutions.com I thought they were reasonable and like I said they are made really well. I love it.
JC-thanks. I'm really thinking about a fire angel. Still not sure yet.

Ant.

I've heard that there is some controversy about brittlestars on this site. I have 2 black brittles that I got with my clean up crew, and frankly, I love them. They are a hoot to spot feed (they take a while, cuz I usually have the meat on the pick too tight), but they always get it off.
I do have some cyrias (sp?) snails that I'm starting to question. They bury themselves into the sand and work there until they realize that there's meat in the tank. I have seen them actually wrestle my stars for their meat. Do you know anything about these snails? I didn't really pay that much attention to them until I saw them attack one of my stars for his prize.
I also saw (the same day I thought I lost Scampi) them attack a poor little blue leg hermit that was looking for another shell...gone...:scared:

feixjai-so glad this process helps someone else. It sure stressed me out but turned out, it wasn't as bad as I thought.
Lisa-that's really interesting about those snails. I heard about them being good to move the sand around but that's about it. Sounds like they have a bit of a mean streak. Good luck. Are brittle stars reef safe? I know I can look that up but since we're chatting I'll ask.
Shiby-likewise!

Just got back from our trip to Laughlin an hour ago, the first thing when I got on the computer was to do a search for your name to see if you had made the switch. Looks GOOD! You are like me when I did my switch. I thought my tank looked good, then when I switched to the new tank it looks so much better. What a nice stand and canopy, hopefully hubby likes it too. (Have not read the whole thread yet, will do that later). that is cool that he helped you also, at least I am assuming that is him in a couple of the pictures, if not you need to shave those arms.
Really looks good, thanks for taking those pics. So cool to see instant progression like that. Cool coralline on your mag float also, that is a good sign.

Did you win anything? Did you take the kids or was this a mom and dad thing? That's funny that you went to Laughlin. John and I are taking a trip to Vegas in Sept. when my parents come to visit. They're going to watch Johnny for us and we're going to steel off for 4 days. Don't know if I can stay away from him for that long. I'm already stressing a little over it. It will be the first for me away from him over night.

Thanks for the compliments. I just love this new set up. John does too. He was a huge help and so was Johnny. What?! You don't go for the underarm hair on women?! :scared: You're right. That was him in the picture and you can see parts of my son. He won't let me put real pictures on the net. You can see my gloved arm and feet in one of the photos. Looks just like me.
I wish I can get some more coraline to grow. The lfs uses this coraline stuff and they grow a bunch but I don't want to use it. I'm already thinking about my next fish. :jumping:

Hi Ant! Really like your new setup, and thanks for the detail on the move! I do have an off the subject question though - what do you mean by "spot feeding"? I've seen the term before, and wondered, so I figured I'd ask!
BTW - I'm purchasing hardware to set up my first s/w tank - hopefully within the next couple weeks!
Thanks!
