I guess we all quit!

Well, here's where I am! Been doing water changes on smaller tanks as always, but have been ignoring the larger tanks. Mostly due to issues I have had!!
Got my seahorses and one had problems when I got it, so medication and wc constantly for days. Then the tank they were supposed to go into had ich, had to tear it apart and set up a ht for hypo. on fish in that tank.(not horses who are still in qt)
wc daily on that.
Then my dwarf lion suddenly died.
(don't know why) came home after 12 hour shift and he was dead. Wasp fish was acting strange. Removed lion and did a 50% water change. Lost wasp the next day. My fault, I jumped the gun and got them before I was ready with the right tank set up. Had them in a 10g. I am sure this contributed to the loss.

Anyway, last weekend, I had a power failure. Both my 125g and 65g restarted and for some reason neither overflows started back,
soooo....did about 20% accidentall wc on both of those.
Yesterday, 5g on 29g, 1g on QT, 1g on HT, and 1g on 10g dwarf horses.

So sorry to hear about all that Shrimpy.
I'm doing hypo at the moment too.
Did a bunch of water changes. I've gone through a box of salt already.

Just did a water change on my 28g ..20% 5 gallons 3/23/2010...
Also how long does it take you guys to this ? I do mine in a strange way I think... i usally mix the SW up the night before check pH add buffer, let it sit over night with a thermo. then moring check SG, temp, and pH ... I then pull my PH and canister power plugs drain 5 gallons from the DT with a hose then after pick up my 5 gallon of NSW and try to slowly poor it in... lol... what do you think... I've been doing it this way for 1 year now and never had a issue..

When you mix your new water, do you run a powerhead in it?
I have a mag7 pump, and I have a hose attached to it....I drain the water from the dt with said pump....then place pump in new water, hose in DT, and pump back in

That's pretty much how I do it.... I usually bubble the RO/DI with the buffer first and then add the salt a little later.
Of course there are little variations with each tank. I can drain 5 out of the 100g without turning anything off because it's a wide tank. NICE! I have a water change hose on the seahorse tank. It drains 5 gallons from the back compartment.... VERY NICE!

I just have a big plastic spoon you would use for pasta( I only use it for SW changes)... i add the salt in the bottom of the bucket before I start to fill it then adjust my water temp from the faucet with a probe to about 82 to get it to mix well... then add the water while stirring.. once the water its about 7/8 up i stop stirring shut water off carry it over to the tank drop in the thermo. add the buffers stir some more then let it sit over night.

you might use less buffer if you add the salt mix slowly to the full amount of water. what happens if you do it the way you do it is that depending on the salt mix, Ca often precipitates out of the solution because it can't dissolve fast enuff into smaller amounts of water. i always wondered why i got precipitate, and it stopped when i learned of this and started mixing the water "properly".

I have added it both ways and still gotten the same result, before and after.. i use about 1 gram of buffer per 5 gallons

I've got salt crusting on my fingertips even as I type this. 20g WC on the 110g tank today, and I have enough left over to do a 5 gallon change on the 37g tank.
Hey while we're on the subject, how does everyone else change their filter material? I usually change the filter floss weekly, but I do it a few hours (or at most, a day) AFTER a water change. I figure I've stirred up enough crapola with the sand and rock blowoff that I'd rather let the old filter catch some of this old material....then I replace filters.

i use the fliter pads for a canister filter so I just rinse mine every 2 weeks and when they become real nasty... 3 months or so .. then I just replace them

You may not have seen problems but this has indeed been "studied" and I'm going to have to refer to Randy Holmes that it is indeed chemically more stable to add the salt to the total volume of measured water.
There are some really good write ups out there.

OK.....so you do NOT use a powerhead? I also use a large spoon to stir, BUT then place a powerhead in the bucket overnight to stir/mix/aerate the water......Are you saying you do not do that? (just want to be clear)

Thanks, Renee! Definitely was one of those times when you think you just want to give it all up. Then you remember your an addict and you try to learn something and move on.
Ok, so I have a 32g trash can. I let it fill about halfway, add the appropriate amount of salt for 30g, stick my arm in there and mix it up, then drop in a ph(heater for some tanks) and let it fill the rest of the way. Next day I do wc.
You are saying it would be better to add all the salt when the can is full?
