things found on the beach

i found something on the beach today and i was wondering if someone could help me out. I is purple with tenticals on the "heart-like region" and a stalk. Any help in identification would be appreciated....it's weird because i'm always on the beach and have never seen this before. Also..i know it's alive and well because it's moving around the tank i have it in so it's not dead or a part of something....help??

Tough one. I would guess some type of Hydroid colony. Pretty cool looking. Have you tried feeding it?

Did I see that right? You put it in your tank? What else is in the with it? Does it swim? Have you had a neap tide lately?
Good luck!

I am just curious as to what possed you to do such a thing. Seriously, that was not such a good idea. You took a pretty big gamble with that one. Especially not knowing what it was. Sure, scorpions look cool, but I sure as hell wouldnt pick one up. What if what you had picked up contained a lethal poison? Get my drift? Not trying to be mean but just pointing something out.
I really have no idea what that is. Sorry

Yeah . . . pretty much got that from the first time he answered me, but thanks for the redundancy.
I was questioning why he picked it up in the first place.

i picked it up with the sand still around it and never touched it. It moves around the bottom of the tank i bought for it but i'd like to know what it is so i can feed it...it doesn't seem to be poisonous because it lets the hermit and fidler crabs walk all over it and the starfish don't seem to mind it...so i'm stumpped

i figured out what they were...they are sea pansies. Part of the jelly fish group...Harmless. Are eated by starfish and eat micro-zooplankton....there stlk is used for anchoring and they are bioluminescent when spooked. I have a good find :D

wat ocean did u find it in. if its the atlantic, i dont think it will live very long becuaz the atlantic ocean is not tropical. the jellyfish thing probly needs a chiller for the water. also, did u just set up a new tank to put it in w/o cycling it, or did u use aged water?

I don't think it a good idea to just go pick up things off the beach because they look cool and take them home. Especially if you don't even know what they are or how to care for them. JMO

isnt it illegal(in some areas around here atleast) to take live things from the beach? i dunno. i also agree with justin and slick, what you did could have been dangerous. what if its an endangered species? or a new one for that matter? im getting a little exteme and im sorry. i think you should return it to its rightful place IMO.
