I a pretty new at this, but I had the same problem. The problem I was having was my salt. So I swithced salts and did not add any buffer, did a 30% water change and everything has been good ever since. My alkalinity is still kind of high, 10-12, but my PH is 8-8.2. I hope this helps.

There is been about 14 billion posts on this. You don't use buffer to raise ph, it just simple doens't work that way. Do a search and you will see. As long as your ph is stable I wouldn't worry about it. I too made the mistake of using buffer to raise my ph and my calcium and magnesium hasn't been right since. It is getting better through water changes but I am still fightnig what seems like a losing battle.

How did you get ALK at 5.5 if you use fresh DI?????
Fresh DI or even tap water has at least 9ppm in ALK. That's the least. My region gets 12ppm in our fresh water.

Why would you add an alkalinity additive when Alkalinity isn't low? I will never understand this.
50% water change will help.
