I'm all for public assistance for those who need it. Sadly, though, I believe that most people abuse their benefits. For example: Last year, while I was in the grocery store check out line I noticed the woman in front of me had not one, not two, but THREE carts full to the brim. Most of what was in her carts was heavily processed foods and sugary drinks, however she also had roughly 20 steaks. No fresh fruits or vegetables, mind you. Her food choices disgusted me almost as much as her full length fur coat and hideously long fingernails. I know that her food choice is none of my business, but it annoyed me nonetheless just as much as I was annoyed by her talking obnoxiously loud on her cell phone while she dug in her purse to pay the cashier. Her total was over $400 and she whipped out her food stamp card.
I saw her in the parking lot once I finished getting rung up as she was loading all her food into her Escalade with the help of her 5 overweight children while she yelled at them like they were adults. No lie- fur coat, luxury car, 5 fat little kids, and food stamps.
There I was, 27 years old at the time, without health insurance, working to put myself through school and feeling livid that I just spent $100 on groceries that wouldn't even last a week.
I had to go to the Emergency Room twice that year for food poisoning. Since I didn't have health insurance, the hospital suggested I apply for assistance and I reluctantly did and was quickly denied. So here I am, a 28 year old single man with no children whose credit will be destroyed if I don't make monthly payments to pay off the $14k I owe the hospital. You would think the government would want to help me out since I am a contributing member of society who has worked very hard towards furthering my education in a field where I will spend the rest of my career helping other people....
Also, a few days ago I saw a woman pay her bar tab with her Access card (that's what welfare is called here, Access). I pay taxes so this lady can use her cash assistance to buy booze? Uncool. IMO, if I have to get drug tested to get a job to pay taxes, then the people who are receiving assistance from my taxes should have to take a drug test in order to get that help. I also think there should be a time limit to how long people can be getting this free $...
