I'm all for public assistance for those who need it. Sadly, though, I believe that most people abuse their benefits. For example: Last year, while I was in the grocery store check out line I noticed the woman in front of me had not one, not two, but THREE carts full to the brim. Most of what was in her carts was heavily processed foods and sugary drinks, however she also had roughly 20 steaks. No fresh fruits or vegetables, mind you. Her food choices disgusted me almost as much as her full length fur coat and hideously long fingernails. I know that her food choice is none of my business, but it annoyed me nonetheless just as much as I was annoyed by her talking obnoxiously loud on her cell phone while she dug in her purse to pay the cashier. Her total was over $400 and she whipped out her food stamp card.
I saw her in the parking lot once I finished getting rung up as she was loading all her food into her Escalade with the help of her 5 overweight children while she yelled at them like they were adults. No lie- fur coat, luxury car, 5 fat little kids, and food stamps.
There I was, 27 years old at the time, without health insurance, working to put myself through school and feeling livid that I just spent $100 on groceries that wouldn't even last a week.
I had to go to the Emergency Room twice that year for food poisoning. Since I didn't have health insurance, the hospital suggested I apply for assistance and I reluctantly did and was quickly denied. So here I am, a 28 year old single man with no children whose credit will be destroyed if I don't make monthly payments to pay off the $14k I owe the hospital. You would think the government would want to help me out since I am a contributing member of society who has worked very hard towards furthering my education in a field where I will spend the rest of my career helping other people....
Also, a few days ago I saw a woman pay her bar tab with her Access card (that's what welfare is called here, Access). I pay taxes so this lady can use her cash assistance to buy booze? Uncool. IMO, if I have to get drug tested to get a job to pay taxes, then the people who are receiving assistance from my taxes should have to take a drug test in order to get that help. I also think there should be a time limit to how long people can be getting this free $...

this is sickening... what is this world coming to? What are the government people doing???
Also I want drug test done to every welfare recipient. If I have to do a drug test to get a job then they have to do one to get my money for free. Seriously, some serious mental issue with these people... I see people cheating the system every day and I'm so pissed off.

I see this exact thing all to often where I live. Someone with a cart full of horrible for you foods, carrying their Gucci or D&G bag with 4 or 5 kids in tow, paying for everything with their EBT (food stamp) card and then taking their brood out to the parking lot and them all piling into their Esacalade or Navigator.

Add all that to the stuff being loaded into hundreds and hundreds of cars with Sonora, Mexico license plates, then you'll understand my frustration. I have followed so many people through checkout lines through the years, watching them swipe the Az EBT cards-bright orange and purple Grand Canyon cards-no way of mistaking. Then I go out in the parking lot and see them loading those food stamp groceries into SERIOUSLY!!!, brand new Escalades, Mercedes and Lexuses with Sonora plates. You want proof, I'll take some pictures, since it's the first week of the month, and our grocery store parking lots are filled with Sonora, Mexico cars, and most are being filled with food stamp groceries. I am not being racist. You can't help but notice this day after day, month after month, year after year. Many times you can see cars with Sonora plates pulling in and out of voting places on election day. They know who keeps the welfare flowing into Mexico and they, and their La Raza/Raul Grijalva political allies fight to keep it flowing.

When I worked for a bank in downtown Battle Creek (Kellogg's world headquarters) I had lots of first hand knowledge of stuff like this. First off about 20% of the population of Battle Creek is supported by government assistance (SS disability, VA benefits, welfare, bridge card {food stamp card in MI}, or just regular old social security). Well the government wants to streamline getting $$ to these folks and they like it to be direct deposited, so this is where I come in. As the bank manager all accounts came to me for approval, and I would always have to ask the bankers to tell me about the new customers. The stories I have heard would make you sick to your stomach.
Okay, I will share a couple. I remember there were two cousins that each needed to open an account to get their free money. I would not have been that upset if it was just social security disability's, or even welfare. They found a loop hole in the system that paid them for doing nothing. Each cousin was about 22 years old and each had at least three kids. They had it worked out that they were each the others state funded day care. Cousin A would watch cousin B's kids and vice versa. The only thing is that neither of them did, they had their grandmother watching all the kids so they could do what ever. They did not get paid that well ($500 + a month EACH) but when you know that it is complete BS that they are getting even a dime for some scam that they pull you get pissed.
Next, A man in his mid to late 30's was sitting at my desk getting an account opened so he could have his social security disability directly deposited. He did not look disabled so I asked him what was up. He said that that is what everyone in his neighborhood does. When they are in their 20's they apply for SS disability and keep trying until they get it. He only got paid like $575.00 per month, but he said he gets subsidized rent and only pays $65.00/ month in rent and he gets $350.00 a month in food stamps. I asked him if he ever would go back to work. He got a little upset at me and then said, "why the hell would I go to work. I get paid just about as much as I would make getting paid mim wage. Why work 40hr/week to make what I get now for doing nothing!!!"
See there's your problem!!
You have people who would rather do nothing and scrape by vs. working and earning their money. When people lack motivation and know that they can not achieve, they do not see any point in even trying because they have such good government services to make sure they do not perish. I have never see such a sense of entitlement as I experienced in Battle Creek Michigan. When you give people enough to just get by then they expect you to hand them everything they ever need.
Oh, and man o man did my parking lot at the bank have some nice whips roll through there.
PS. The folks I was speaking of came from all walks of life, young and old, and every color in the rainbow. This is not a race thing, it is a socioeconomic thing.

It makes me mad when I see things like this. When I worked in fast food, people would ask me all the time if we accepted food stamps. When I would politely say that we did not, they would begin arguing that I was denying them food.
My father (whom I am disconnected from) became "disabled" 20 years ago (supposedly my fault) and has been collecting SS. He has back issues which causes him to be in pain and according to him and his doctors he is unable to sit or stand for long periods of time, can't lift more than 20 lbs and some other restrictions. He has remodeled 2 houses and I am talking gutting it and restoring it. He also has restored cars from the 60's. He also took care of a farm. He can do all of these things, but can't hold a job???????? The real reason he can't hold a job is that he is a raging alcoholic. He has a beer in hand from the time he wakes up until he passes out at night.

I call Bull Crap. As a banking agent it is your duty to report fraud of any kind. Which is what both cases were, fraud, according to your story.

If you carefully read his post, you will notice that he neither confirmed nor denied their accounts and reported it. He did not disclose that information in his post. So for now, I am believing it because I also know people first hand who are cheating the system.

Yet people call me a Parasite on the system because I have Epilepsy I can not Drive at all if I go anyplace on my own my Docs have now ordered me to Wear a Helmet also I can not leave the house alone at all anymore. Yet people that neve3r have met me call me a scammer and want to see me kicked off SSDI when just Feb 25th I had a siezure so severe I broke 6 Kevlar and SS wires that were holding my Right shoulder together and got the MRI back today on my Chest I tore the Pectoral Muscles 80% free from the bones they attach to no wonder my chest hurts still.

Really?!?!
What part of LOOP HOLE in the system did you not understand. Loop holes are not fraud. It may be immoral but not illegal.
And the other guy. Are you saying that it was my job as an agent for the bank to challenge who social security approves or denies? Really?!?!
Again did not say either was fraudulent or illegal. I just said that it would make you sick to your stomach. Which it looks like it did. lol
Now if you really want to get mad... I know of some nice upper middle class white kids that are getting food stamps while they are attending college. Their parents help pay for school and I am sure they get student loans of some sort, but I know of a group of kids that are getting upwards of $200.00/ month on a bridge card. If you have 4 of them that live together in a student appt that would be almost a grand a month they could spend on groceries. ITS NOT FRAUD, BUT A LOOP HOLE!!! They make very little income, so they are approved for government assistance.

Boo on them. They system exists for folks like you!! Plus SSDI is a prorated system. The more you paid into SS the greater benefit you get when you need it. If you take someone who has woked for 30 years then becomes disabled, they would get a larger SSDI payment then someone who only paid into the system for a few years.

I always seem to hear these kind of stories second hand, and I usually think "Hey that's messed up!". But I have never seen anything like this first hand, which makes me wonder if it is extremely rare or if it just depends on where you live. From some of the stories it sounds like it is an everyday/everywhere occurance.
Regardless of whether it is a widespread occurance, it is kind of messed up.. I can see using va or disability benefits if you have earned them even if you end up winning the lottery. It may seem greedy, but if they earned those benefits then I won't complain. But foodstamps after winning the lottery, that is just plain wrong. And the justification that I have two houses and I need money for food... just plain wrong!

And that of course is the truth of the matter...we don't know what the other person is suffering, looks are decieving. I never look to see who is using what card at the store, nor what car they drive. I might notice a gaggle of children belonging to a single couple...That's just because I miss my own grandkids. It isn't any of my business. I'm not putting my head in the sand but judging Joe Everyguy down the street is a waste of time and energy.
Folks...my granddaughter gave good advice to me when she was only 3 years old and playing with my nic-naks...as she replaced them where they belonged she told me.."Don't look Nana, it will just upset you". Folks...keep your eyes in your head and minding your own life, be a moral standard for those around you because in the end, YOU are the only person on Earth you have the power to control or change.

So when we see a crime being committed just "close our eyes"? Sounds like a plan for total chaos, but if it makes one feel good...

It is no crime to purchase groceries in a store. So who cares who uses a swipe card from the government or the bank debit where they do business?...Just the busybodies notice. A crime is a whole different thing, I call the police and or help the victim.
I don't get my underware in a bunch over who drives what car or how they pay for their groceries...maybe it is their expensive car and maybe it's somebody elses who loaned it to them, unless I accidently hit it...it's none of my business. What difference does it make if the guy next door gets help from the government with paying his rent or electric bill? I still pay my taxes, reguardless of what the government by majority vote decides is the best way to spend those tax dollars. They will take out that amount no matter what. I would rather help a fellow pay an electric bill or a family pay their rent than pay for the $10,000.00 heated toilet seat I read about. It is just a matter of distrabution, it won't matter what YOU pay in taxes. Everyone has a set amount to pay according to income, and whatever loop hole you can find to keep some of your own money.

Right, so I should just close my eyes and ignore the fact that there are fraudsters in my own neighborhood, using MY TAX DOLLARS to buy soda, ring dings, sugary cereal and god knows what other crap food, using government issued food stamps? Not a chance in hell!

LOL...Do you really think you can stop it? Aside from getting yourself all worked up, you accomplish nothing, not to mention you could misjudge a person. All you can do it vote for the leader that matches your personal agenda. Once the government is in place THEY decide where your tax dollars go. Getting all upset about the guy in line in the store ahead of you and what they purchase doesn't do a thing but cause you to die earlier from stress....there is a right way to do anything, and getting yourself sick over what some stranger drives around in, or feeds their family on your tax dollars won't help a thing.

I think we can all agree that there is a certain minority of the people on assistance who could certainly help themselves. Heck, it may even be a majority for all I know. But here is the problem. Let's say you up and take all people off welfare or assistance today, what do you think is going to happen tomorrow?
We are between a rock and a hard place in this area, because if you cut those people off completely, they would have two choices: 1) Go out and work for your money, or 2) Start doing illegal things like crime to make your money. I think it's safe to say that there are already very few jobs available, and sadly there is more money in crime than an honest days work. So what do you think most of these people would end up doing? When they start to go that route, then crime jumps, the jails and legal system get even more taxed, and we end up spending even more money to keep these people in check, or house them in prisons than we would have spent on welfare in the first place. And on top of that, we are living in a much more dangerous society.
This is the one and only thing about being a democrat that really irks me. Because I have heard firsthand people say they voted for Obama so they can keep that money coming. The sad reality is that both the D's and R's have let this go from a program that really did help people 50 years ago, to an out of control social free for all. The only way it's going to change is if you take a very, very slow approach to reverse this, by each year taking away more and more assistance (except to those who actually need it) from those who abuse the system, and at some point it would stop. But this is not something that any president or congress could do in 4 or even 8 years.

System exists for people like you and I have no problem with that. You need assistance and you need to read little bit more of what I wrote because in no way or form, I have called people legally using the system as parasites. To clarify, you are telling me that you are legitimately using the system that are made for people like you with conditions and again I have no problem with that. Problem that I have is people who are chasing the loopholes in the system, taking money when they are not qualified for it. They are the parasite
of this society and that's what grinds my gear and apparently many people here. Look around you, our economy is going down the toilet, they are cutting down medical pays and benefits for our vets and for our soldiers for crying out aloud. These people are bleeding this country dry and if you have a legitimate reason, there's no reason for you to be so defensive.
