The major down side IMO is fake coral is the bate (no pun intended) that will hook you on starting a real reef tank

I have an Atlantis ruin in my 55 QT. It has alot of detail painted on. At first it got covered green, then all the algae eaters in the tank discovered it and it now stays pretty good. It still has enough algae to look "ancient" and deep sea, but enough details to look pretty. It was my wife's idea-BTW.

Not once have you corrected me in any advice that I have given, therefor it's fair to assume that you are not being sarcastic.

I have fake coral in my tank then I had some algea bloom. Well the algea is gone exept on the fake coral. I'm cleaning my tank tommorow and throwing out fake coral along with the water. When tank matures I'm getting the real deal!!!

There is a time and a place for fake corals, and it is all down to the owner. But don't for a minute think it will look that good without effort. I worked at an aquariun with artificial corals, and much of my job was climbing into tanks to nearly constantly scrub the algae off. The particular fake corals used did not have color all the way through, to then the color came off and overall they looked like crud.
Moveable pieces can be removed and easily bleached at regular intervals - which is what many restaurants will do to keep them looking good. IMO it is what needs to be done.
IMO, some of those corals look extraordinarily artificial and so I, personally, do not like those pictured above. That is just not realistic. It is up to the owner...but eh. Not to mention it would compete quite a lot, IMO, with the beauty of the fish themselves.
Do not overlook the benefits of natural live rock to larger fish like angels and tangs. there is no doubt whatsoever that it provides a more natural habitat for them - more realistic grazing and seems to reduce stress.

i personally think it sucks sorta like getting fake house plants or a fake lawn if you want coral suck it save money & buy the real thing theres way more satisfaction in keeping something alive & watching it grow sorry if that was mean just my thoughts
i dunno i have a brown thumb when it comes to plants..lol heck i can kill an air fern lmao.I think some of the fake ones look better for longer.. although each has its own ups and downs.. real requires stricter water quality chem balence etc .lighting water flow special foods placement ..alot goes into a full blown reef tank. as for keeping the fakes clean a good clean up crew should do that for you .even if you went for an aggressive tank the cost of a few snails and crabs periodicly are gonna cost a heck of alot less than your elec bill or a coral.. some people would rather keep their minds on the idea of watching the fish themselves grow rather than the enviroment they live in. jmho and my personal experience
