Tiling my fish room... PLEASE HELP, my contractor is an idiot (I think)

Tell him that you have redesigned the room and need extra electrical wiring run but he cannot nock out any part of the walls. Also let him know that you need 2 or 3 electrical outlets in the floor and that he will have to cut into the concrete to do it. When he gives you that "WTFun" look, tell him to stop giving you suggestions and you will stop annoying him.

I spit in his coffee this morning. Seemed like a fair trade...

wow, evil
LOL, I know. But,
They're 6 months past date of completion. 1 or 2 months, fine, but 6?!? Seriously?!?
I'm a fairly good looking 27 year old female, try being me and dealing with the daily right next door to where I'm living. I get whistled at, etc on a daily basis, that gets old when it's been going on for over a year.
I also bring these pr*cks coffee two times a day and give them lunch, have not once gotten so much as a "thanks," just more whistling as I walk away.
They shot a nail gun at the neighbor's cat TWICE
The one guy on the job calls me a spoiled rich brat since I'm 27, live on Long Island on the eastern end, own drag racing cars and fish tanks...
This is on top of all the things they've done wrong that had to be redone because the house didn't pass inspection

Hold it right there..... I'm gonna need pictures...
J/K, yeah, I work in the siding bussiness amd while most of our installers would never even consider whistling at a customer for fear i would kill hem (That and they are respecatble guys) I have seen several framing crews that are quite the opposite.
That is really poor taste to treat a paying customer that way. Good for you for spitting in his coffee, I hope he was the one whistling the loudest!

Yeah, they're a lovely crew, let me tell you. The electrician was the worst offender. I literally got in his face and flipped $hit. In the beginning a lot of the workers thought I was the daughter of the people having the house built so the harassment was just wonderful then. Once they realized I was the one paying them, it stopped a little, but there are still a few that I'd love to punch in the face. It's tough being right next door to them, the warmer months were... interesting... LOL

lol sounds like you've been having quite the experience. Isn't renovating fun??? Ok, BT I'll say it one more time and then I'll bow out gracefully. Use the quick set mortar and wait a good solid 2-4 weeks and don't think twice...it'll be alright. If your hubby and his friend lay the tile then I'm sure they know to get the recommended size notch trowel to lay the mortar for what ever size tiles they're working with. With all do respect to Monsinour, you don't ever want to lay your tiles essentially flat/flush with the floor...you'll end up with loose tiles everywhere within a year or two. And the squishing??? Obviously there aren't many folks on the site who have ever layed the stuff before...after 24-48 hours there will be no such thing. Just my .02...I hope it all works out for ya and they get your house finished soon. Good luck!

Thanks!
I was talking to my husband at lunch about this whole issue. We're literally going to play "rock paper scissor" best of 3 for which way we're going with the tiling. If I win, the whole room gets tiled, LOL. I'm not scared, nothing worse can happen to this renovating nightmare, LOL *knocks on wood*

Here is another way of looking at the weight - 180 gallon tank - total weight 3000 pounds, conservative or not. Your tank is 6 feet long by 2 feet (footprint) I read earlier that the stand contacts the whole perimeter - so the stand contacting the floor is 16 square inches - so 3000/16=187.5 pounds per square inch. I weigh 270 pounds - I don't crack tiles even if I stand on my tipy toes. Plus your tank is going on a concrete slab the floor is not going to move.

Have you looked at using a modified acrylic thinset? Not quite sure I described it correctly, but it's a variation of regular thinset and adds a little flexibility to the tile...

What I have already done the Math for my 450 plus Sump and it breaks down for me like this With everything in the tank it is less than 350 lbs a sqaure foot and I am putting mine over Sheet Vinyl.

I calculated this all wrong - the stand perimiter is 6' + 6' +2' + 2' = 16' = 192" - say the stand is 1" thick = 192 square inches = point load = 3000/192=15.625 pounds per square inch Sorry about that it - it really is not that much.

15 Lbs per inch? that almost nothing
thats 180 lbs per tile if they are 12 x 12's
I guarantee i could tkae my 180 lb self and jump up and down on a two week old set tile and not budge it!

I'm still not moved in, so you've got time, LOL.
I don't see this tank going in the house until March at this point. I'm not holding my breath anymore....
