I go to the UW and have just started my 36 g bowfront. I've got 50+# of live rock and a couple false percs. when I get my loans you know where there going. Hopefully I'll be getting some corals shortly.

i beg to differ as far as the most expensive hobby goes i still have spent and will spend WAY more money on paintball my paintball marker cost more than alot of large complete setups.
and are those nano tank complete setups any good that they sell in a box at the lfs, for like a quaranteen tank or refuge?

I attend St.Leo Univerisy in dade city florida. I brought my 75 reef to my dorm and let me tell you, this is the best way to get girls into your room! Just leave the door open and when they walk by and see that, wham here they come. I love having my tank at school.

gotta admit it....
i myself have spent less than $100 on my tank! ok, my mom has bought me lots of stuff, including the tank and food. i buy my water, my false perc, hydrometer, things i need right away. and of course we started my tank w/ water and lr from my mom's tanks, and she gave me some pulsing xenias from her tank. which i am going to be taking some in to my lfs for credit.
i have also decided that i had better just transport my tank home w/ me over christmas/spring break, cuz they keep the heat here on all the time and it gets really hot, and i need to do top offs everyday!

I'm a senior in high school but hopefully next year I'll be going to UGA. I can't decide if I should get a small tank or not. I already live in Athens so it wouldn't be that far from home to come see Nemo and Gurgle. Do you guys not have problems with keeping up with work and the tank? I have a hard time with it and I'm not in college yet!

Well my college is so close that I still live at home(I am still only 18). I have my 12 gallon nano cube, that I absolutely adore, even if I am too poor to actually afford to keep one. My parents think I am crazy because instead of shopping for clothes almost all my money goes directly to the tank or to gas so I can get stuff for the tank.
"What kind of girl are you? you need a new shirt not a candy cane!!!" when my mom said that I had just bought a new green trumpet coral. Though now she is thinking about ripping out our wall to put in a 100 gallon built-in unit.

one more thing, why does everyone name their clownfish Nemo? I know the movie was cute and everything but I should think something a little more original would occur to people. I named my black saddleback pair, Trajan and Helana (I like roman history). Not to rant on anyone who named their fish nemo but it seems every time I even hear about a clownfish it's "Nemo".

that's why my false perc's name is herbie! but it does make it easier when people who know nothing about saltwater ask what kind of fish you have. a false percula, or a 'nemo fish'?

I'm a law student at Ole Miss and I've had my 30 gal. up for about a year and a half now. I would have to disagree with the folks saying go with the smaller tank- in my experience, the larger the tank the easier it is to leave it for longer lengths of time (like Christmas) with no one to keep it up. This summer I had a guy who lied and told me he knew how to take care of S/W (he should be shot) who subleased my place and when I came back to check on it halfway through the summer, the pumps were ENTIRELY out of the water and my poor fish were hiding in the rocks, afraid for their lives!!! My boyfriend thought they had all died, but as soon as I changed the water, out they came. (Not to condone neglect by any means, I would certainly have paid someone from the pet store to come by and do frequent water changes had I known I was dealing with a complete moron!) I used a simple, $7 Wal-Mart auto feeder and it lasted about half the summer (I kid you not)....it was great! I also had my lights on timers. The guy was supposed to do water changes but didn't, but because I had a 30 it wasn't as bad as it could have been I guess. Anyway, not to ramble, but just advice on the smaller vs. larger tanks.

i just think that it would be a little easier to take my 5 gal home than a 30 or 55 gal.... especially since i live in the dorms, and it's an hour to my house.

They turned the power off (or so they claimed-that might have just been to get everyone to clean out the frig.) in the dorms . So no way could I live a tank behind. I had a little 2.5 gl fw I moved to and from the dorm with me.
school and sw tanks, not the best idea. We started out tanks as undergrad, we had time, I wasn't working. Then came grad school, working 38 hours a week and going to school fun time. My fish died the day the quarter ended and I was going to move them that night (died from high temps, had another tank ready to move them). after that my 55gl stayed empty and I moved the two stars to the 75gl. 2 stars in a 75gl for a year. Still haven't added fish yet...not quite ready.
why does everyone name their clownfish Nemo?
Mine were Angel and little bit, but that was before the movie. I refuse to name any fish/invert from that movie. Unless of course one day I have a kid and they see that movie, then maybe the fish will be named nemo.
Yea for being out of school! Sinner's still in though, going for phd.

Well, I'm a college student once again. Took a vacation at a sand resort for a couple of years. I currently have 55g aggressive, was my qt tank, and a 115g reef. The reef is a work in progress. I'm loving it though. I have about 200lbs of LR in there, w/ fiji, tonga branch, and carribian.
As for where I go and what I'm studying, I go to Tn Tech Univ, and am in psych. Have my MIS deg. but I hate the job opportunities because I hate web design. I LOVE networking and hardware analysis, but HATE, WITH A PASSION, web design. To stick a college grad into web design is Stupid, when a 15 year old kid can do the same ()&*#$ thing, however, lets see a kid make an extensive COBOL program or setup a 2500 pc network. Yea. lol. that's my two cents and now I'll get off my soap box.
As you can see w/ my avatar, I'm psych now. Looking forward to teaching on the university level sometime in the future.

Hey guys, I'm a junior at the University of Oklahoma. I just got my first 20 gallon saltwater tank yesterday, and I'm going to start stocking it with Live Rock and other stuff tomorrow. I was told it was best to wait a few days before adding fish. I know this isn't really a Q&A forum, but can anyone tell me the benifits of using live sand over Crushed Coral?
