Toadstool Leather ?'s

Just curious how long (in general) it should take for a toadstool leather to "open" after switching tanks, I bought one friday night and aside from partaiily opening yesterday, its still clamped up tight. Is this normal? My mushrooms opened fully the next day. Also, whats the bare minimum in terms of time i should run my lights, i have a 175w MH and 2x 55w PC's on a 35gallon. The leather will demand the most light and im having an algae problem so i need to know the window of time where i will have enough light for the corals but not enough for the algae. Thanks for any help!!!

IMO leathers are very finky but it can also be good cause the littles thing will effect them but they always snap back. I use that coral as my timer for the water changes and light changes, right at the 6month time he starts acting funky. So i'm thinking it can take a week or two for them to get "comfy" i've heard there a lower light like mushrooms will be. mine is under 4 vho's on a 90g

When i got my newly fragegd toadstool it took about a week to get the full extent of the tenticles to stay out all the time. But they are very censitive to anything such as my clown trying to swim in it..lol

It could take a week or longer. With what you have in lighting, you can be pretty flexiable with light time on.

Well its been 5 days at its still clamped up tight, my cleaner shrimp was all over it last night picking the little loose pieces of flesh off the stock, could the shrimp be a reason for it to stay closed?? :notsure:

At night, my cleaner shrimp and emerald crab crawl all over my corals and clean their rocks. However, they always open up the next day when the lights are turned on. I don't think that the shrimp would cause yours not to open.

Hi Armlocker,
When I first got mine I had no idea it stayed closed up for so long. It turned a very ugly ashen gray and I was real sure it was dead. I was just about to take it back to the LFS when I read on this site that they sometimes take awhile to acclimate. One or two days later it dropped its slime film and opened fully. Been fine ever since. If I remember right it took about 7 days to open.
Hang in there, they can surprise you!

From what I know most leathers take a while to get accumliated to the tank it took mine about 2 weeks until it got comfortable to open up. Often times they seem like their dead when they change color its hard to tell what really they are doing mines scares me sometimes where I think its dieing but it comes around when its ready.
