too cold for shipping????

a friend of mine here in new jersey recently purchased some fish from a online source(lfs). even though, they were packed with heat packs(5) it was not enough to keep the fish alive. it is the winter time folks temps around 10 in the tri-state area. do yourself a favor wait to the weather warms up when having livestock shipped from toasty warm fla to ice cold nj. both the lfs(TRYING TO MAKE A BUCK) and my friend (TRING TO SAVE A BUCK)should have known better.not only that your package could be sent to the wrong address.

I have always wondered that. Does SWF not ship to an area if it is too cold? Is there a cut off temp? I am in the NE and it is COLD today, and I know the back of a delivery truck is not much warmer!

The boxes do have the heat packs, but buyers should use their best judgement when ordering. If you live in an area where it is very cold right now then don't order at this time. The same goes for during holidays when shipping will take longer.

sometimes the $$$$$ is more important. i have bred, sold and shipped dogs for 20yrs. but never during the winter months, i dont care if they offer me double the $$$$.

What are you saying here? Are you blaming the online companies for shipping the fish?

We have not shipped to the midwest and Northeast since midweek. We look at the temperature the night of the shipment and the next day for each individual orders zip code and our packers put the appropriate number of heat packs for the size box sent.
Our success rate is very good, but sep makes a great point. Believe me, no one here is out to make a buck by shipping dead fish.

Many shipping company’s have a cold weather guideline for livestock and will not ship even if the company shipping wants to

Takes common sense on the person ordering too... living in North Dakota we had a high yesterday of 16 below zero. I have had stuff shipped in before in the winter months.. and the stuff lived although took awhile for some of the inverts to come around but I've learned just not worth it. It might be next day but Fed Ex doesn't deliver until 3-4 pm and that's along time on the truck in our weather.

I just recently recevied a shipment from swf.com and the box had heatpacks and was packaged extremely well....And it gets cold in Oklahoma too. Right now it is 30.

Yeah, I was going to say SWF has it in the shipping T&C's that they won't ship to certain areas during the winter. I can't imagine a store with an "Arrive Alive" policy would make much money shipping DOA fish.

i'm actually waiting for a package from swf. I hope it comes in tomorrow so my bro and i can work on it a bit. I'm in chicago and its about 10 below 0 degrees. The chicago river has frozen and wind chills are about 50 below. Unfortunately, our order hasn't been shipped yet. We ordered on Wednesday night and was expecting it today however our order is still pending. I have tried calling swf to find out some answers but nothing yet.
I was hoping to get it today or tomorrow so that I can acclimate the snails/crabs and coral before my bro left for school.

I live in Or and I ordered fish from New York and he put them in a huge bag of water with two small heat packs. They were flown and they all made it just fine.
(I picked them up at the airport)

i do not think you will get your order before he leaves. its just to cold and to much of a risk to ship in that temperate.

just letting everbody know what happened to a friend of mine. it is mighty cold around here and it has been that way all week(below freezing). i wont say anymore. i am hanging on by a thread
