We own a small apartment complex (3 units) in Manayunk, PA, about 40 minutes away from us. A couple of months ago we were finally making a bit more than breaking even... which is $50 a month. We just got a call that someone dropped a box of cockroaches in the front hallway... What may have been someones funny joke/prank may now cost my family hundreds of dollars in extermenation fees and even more in tenants that may want to shorten or not extend their leases.

If the roach dropper was in the house, then your family's tenants let them in. That makes them responsible. If they didn't let them in and the roaches were dropped at the front door, I would not worry. I am sure that there are more roaches outdoors then any amt in that box.
Sounds to me like your tenants have enemies.

They were dropped at the front door.... and yes, it is a reason to worry... they are spreading everywhere... FAST... and it's not just a couple.. its 1000s.

You know.....any apartment complex I ever knew of...or dealt with....had their own exterminating contract
IMO you should get one to protect your investments.......it is very hard to get rid of roaches once they start laying and get into everything......I think you (or your parents..LOL) should do something NOW

We got an exterminator. We have never had ANY pest problems... not even minor ones...with the complex in the 7 years that we have owned it.... so that's why we don't have an exterminating contract or anything.

Honestly, I would seriously have your parents get an exterminator on contract ASAP. A lot of people that live in apartments are like gypsies, they move from place to place. These people don't have a care about the place they live in. They don't maintain things, leave food out, don't take the trash out timely and the list goes on from here. The exterminator will save you tons of headaches. I would have to believe that the place was already infested and now it is manifesting itself.

I live in a one bedroom apartment in 400sqft of room with my wife... We take care of our stuff and empty the trash etc. etc. I can't stand roaches or bugs or anything ... and I am a clean freak. Everything has a place and a function. lol
BUT I know what you mean about people in apartments being gypsies. I've seen my share of the inside of apartments, homes, and trailers. People are NASTY.

Somebody in the apt has an enemy. Who would do such a thing just for a prank? No one. I think I would start interviewing the tenents to see what they know about this.
1000 roaches? Where or how exactly does not collect this to put in a box. Very strange.

Hi,
Yes, get an exterminator ASAP....check with your tenents and see who may have a lizard. mealworms and coachroaches are sold as food for them, maybe it was a shipment sent that broke open or something along those lines. Also are you sure they are coachroaches? The mealworm is a larva of a brown beetle that looks very simular...if a mealworm shipment took too long to arrive..it might arrive in beetle stage which the box was not sealed against escaping. Either way you will still need to exterminate them.
A Darkling beetle...AKA adult mealworm

gypsy is quite a derogatory term for the roma. we seem to get away with it a lot in north america where there arent roma who would tune you royal for saying it not to mention reinforcing stereotypes. there are roma that are too poor to live up the the standards you would like them to but this is true with a percentage of any population. im the last person to give credence to political correctness but out of basic respect there are things you simply dont call blacks, gays, handicapped, women, whatever. its no different with the roma.
sorry about your bugs.

LOL....Do you wonder why I would know the mealworms grow into what looks like coachroaches??? As a teenager I had a shipment and didn't open it right away...when I did those "coachroaches" emerged, my mother was horrified to say the least. I have not kept lizards since then.

I know that some people can be messy...but... the complex is very small... 3 units.. and we know each of the tenants very well... I mean, we get invited to events in their apartments.

Yes, I also agree that people can be nasty. But, we know our tenants very well... and some of them may not be clean freaks, but we know that they are not gross enough to cause any type of bug infestation.

Yep, we filled a police report... and we'll see what they'll do. I doubt that they'll do much, but what the person did is a crime... 2 crimes actually... trespassing and vandalism. Maybe not trespassing since it was the hallway of the complex, but vandalism for sure.
Maybe they got the roaches on that site. Lol.

No, I don't reckon that any one in there has a lizard/iguana/etc... but I will look into that bug. Possibely could be.
The exterminator is there today... and we will see what he says. Thanks for the idea, flower.

Actually, I was thinking that it was a food delivery for one of the tenants' exotic pets. It is very likely the case. So, how exactly did you find out that someone left a box of roaches at the front door?
