Top off water?

Just curious if you have a lot of evaporation and you top off often, how would this play into your water changes? I dont use any top on my tank and i top off alot. Also i dont have a RO/DI yet, is there anything i can do to my water to help?

It doesn't play in to water changes at all. The more often you topoff the more stable the salinity is going to be. That's one reason why autotopoff is desired.

if your not using RO/water for top offs and you top off often you should increase the frequency of your water changes because as the water evaporates it leaves behind almost everything, if ceartain chemical compounds are riding in on your top off they are increasing with every top off the only way to dilute them is through water changes.

Yes either get a ro/di system or buy ro/di water from the lfs. That is your only 2 choices for a successful tank.
Top off daily or 2 times a day or even better get a auto top off. I took a 2 gallon gas can and turned it upside down inside the sump. This way when the water drops below the threshold air is let in and water gulps into the tank.

Where can i get a RO/DI for a good price then? I dont have an autotopoff so can i get one that i can just use out of the faucet. Im still new to the whole reef tank thing, so i hope i dont sound stupid.

I came here a while back and those three magic words above were my saving grace in this hobby.
Fantastic system and the guru (as he calls himself there) is really hands on in customer service! I had a malfunction a week into using my unit (I broke one of the outputs) and he replaced my top unit for free!

Thanks, im looking at the compact reef keeper model. So how do these RO/DI things work? Do i just hook it up to the sink and let it run into a bucket? I really have no idea about these things. :notsure:

Hook it up to the sink or washing machine. It takes 4 gallons of tap water and turns it into 1 gallon of ro/di. Efficient hugh? It drips ever so slow into a bucket. Get a float valve to shut it off or you will have an expensive puddle.
