Trip to the Georgia Aquarium [Large Pictures]

I went to the Georgia Aquarium this weekend. It was amazing. Thought I would post some pictures. Here they are.



This is a shot of the setup. It is a wavemaker tank. Every 5 minutes or so, a wave crashes onto the reef.


Not sure what type of fish this is. Does anyone know?


This is the 6.2 million gallon tank. It's breathtaking.

This tank is supposed to simulate the reef off of Georgia. ^ v

I think that the fish you are referring to are called “Goliath grouper,” previously known as “Jew Fish.”
I have a question myself…
Do you know if they let certified divers dive in their aquarium like they do at Epcot? I just went to the living seas at Epcot a few weeks ago and dove in their aquarium which was an amazing experience.
Your pictures are incredible, I can’t wait to get up to Atlanta to visit it myself.

I don't remember seeing any moorish idols. I could be wrong. They did have some "false moorish idols" also called the Heniochus Black and White Butterflyfish, also known as Longfin Bannerfish. If you are referring to the Georgia Coast exhibit, they aren't Moorish Idols but I don't know what their called, maybe a Look-Down?
reedlog - I'm not sure if they allow divers in the tanks. If I had to guess, it would be no because I didn't see anything that said it was offered. Also, there is a hammer head in the 6.2 mil gallon tank and the reef tank is pretty full so it wouldn't be much of a swim.

I'll still swim with the hammerhead, wouldn't be a first. :happyfish Hopefully they will offer it some day if they don't already.

Wats with the picture of the BUTT?!?!?!?!... LOL
Also i dont think they would let you dive in there because of the whale shark and if i remember correctly Whale sharks are indangered so they wouldnt want to risk it. but if you go down there email them before you go and ask. who knows mabye they will allow it. :jumping:

That's not goliath grouper. The first picture of the set is a Cucabara Snapper. Anyways that aquarium is absolutely breathtaking!!! ***)

epcot lets you dive with turtles... also endangered
anyways, i doubted that they would, but was just curious
are both of the photos that he is asking what kind of fish it is cuberra? or just the top one?

If he is talking about the top one its the snapper but if he is talking about the bottom one its the grouper, but hey who gives a damn
Im just still amazed at the huge tank

One question......How is that reef lit. Do they have their own lighting system or is it actual natural sunlight. If thats a lighting system......WOW............I wonder how much it was to light that puppy.

i was wondering the same thing. It was pretty crowded when I was there so aquarium staff were busy or hard to find. I'm pretty sure it's artificial light. Otherwise, they would lose some control over the environment.
Are you sure that's a Cubera Snapper? I looked it up and it is supposed to be gray to dark brown. Supposed to have red eyes too.
