Turbo Snails Dying! Grrr...

Ok, on Thursday I went to my LFS and purchased 4 Turbos. 1 died yesterday and just now I came home after doing laundry to find another one face up. I poked it and it didnt retract into its shell like they normally do. This snail wasnt very active and only moved probably 4 inches from where I placed it in the tank. The other 2 are doing great, chowing down on my diatoms and cruising all over the tank. What gives? I figured if it was something in the tank, theyd all be dead by now...

One bit the dust before we got home, another has moved about one inch so far, and one more has moved about 5, the other two are hanging out at the water line...........?????????????? They are basicall useless in there. hmmmmmmmmm. Will be anxious to see what people say.

i ordered my 50 turbos online thru ---- (big company, but i can't post who)
they arrived 3 days late due to a freak snowstorm and not one died. i acclimated them in a stewpot filled w/my tank water for a day and transferred them by hand to the tank. my tank doesn't have a heater and keeps room temp of about 75 degrees. didn't lose 1. maybe i'm lucky, but that's my first experience w/snails and now i have a crapload of the -uckers.

all of my turbo snails died within a two week period. All of my other inverts that i got at the same time are just fine. I'm hesitant to buy more.

thirdchaos,
I noticed you are from Arizona. Did you get your turbos from a LFS or online?
My tank's first inhabitants were 3 turbos. About 2-3 weeks later I lost all 3. I originally thought they hermits got to them, but no one has taken any of the empty shells yet. Now my best guess is I didn't drip acclimate for long enough.

I dont know about the acclimation. I floated and did the drip method for awhile and 2 of mine still zoinked out on me. Im contemplating going to get some more. Im heading off to the LFS and Im gonna bring a cup of water with me so they can test my water params.

I have lost about 6 turbos over the last month and my lfs told me low ph could cause that. Mine was low (7.8) and since I raised it the other three have been doing good except they don't eat like I thought they would. I think I've read other threads in the past where people are having the same problems with turbos. I don't think I'll be buying them anymore.

Good luck! Let us know how they do.
The first 3 I had all seemed find, but died about 2-3 weeks later. Fortunately, they've been the only 3 losses I've suffered.

Ok, I just got back and my 4 new Turbos are floating. I told them about the whole ordeal and they only charged me for 2, so at least thats good. I mean, I wouldve paid for all 4 but they said since the other 2 are doing ok, it might have been somethihng wrong with the snails. I also gave them my water and they said everything was fine.
I hope these guys make it!
Thanks for the support everyone!

mrbrands,
Im in phoenix too! I got my turbos from the ocean floor and aquatouch. they've all died and i dont know why. I suppose it could be my hermits, but i've never seen them do anyhting agressive like that.

thirdchaos - The hermits aren't necessarily picking on them when you are around. They could be doing it at night.
I got my most recent 5 turbos from Ocean Floor and they're all still here. :D

you dont have to float them for 2 hours, maybe thats what killedthem. just float them for about 20 min at the most and then drip them for about 2-3 hours. maybe being in the bag so long killed them

Ok, I floated them for about 40 mins then acclimated for 1.5 hours. 1 is eating as I type, 2 are stuck on the rock and the 4th is on the LR but not coming out of its shell. My fingers are crossed...
