Hi all,
I was reading a post in here yesterday ( which i cannot find already ) about someone who lost power to his tank and most of his fish perished. I am amazed that we as Hobbyists do not pay attention to this area. Just so happens that i deal with UPS' for a living. ( i am a computer network guy ) and i have a large selection of them. So, if any of you need something like this drop me an email. I can provide you with one with new batteries for less than 1/2 the price you pay at the store. Or, maybe we could work out a trade for some fish stuff !
thanks,
Joe

JSCarb,
hee is a link to an APC UPS Smart 700 at warehouse.com
http://www2.warehouse.com/product.as...o&BCID=2776470
i can give you a refurb with new batteries for $140.00 & actual shipping.....
APC's are the best brand... this one is really cool because you can hook it to your pc and determine actual run time with the load you are putting on it... also you can have it email you when there is a problem...

Not knocking APC or anything.. My Company uses over 8,000 of them. But... (you knew there would be one) The runtime on them is not long on battery. Espically if your trying to run multiple pumps. I had an APC1400 on my tank at home and at best, it would run my pumps for about 1 hour. Not too bad for a battery but 1 hour would hardly hurt the tank without pumps.
A better alternative is a small generator. Of course, I can't afford one but it would be nice to have.
I think they are awsome at surge supresion so, Even better than Panamax brand surge arresters. So for that they are worth it. I really like them. They do give you some time to shut things down properly.
And, the price you gave is a good price for the 700...

Wamp,
I am going to do some testing with my tank so i can give a guesstimate of runtime... with my hardware...

Let me know how it turns out.. If using the 700, I would be really interasted to know. I have found the the 1400 is not that great of a unit to begin with. The Heat that builds up in the case while running on batteries might be the cause of early demise...???
They are probably the best units on the market though. We have had very little hardware failures on them. Mostly battery failures... Occasionaly a comm failure..
I highly recomend them to those with computers..

Wamp,
just for s&g i hooked up a apc smart 1400 to my 20 gallon tank...
i didnt have a set of brand new batteries handy so i used a set dated new 12 / 01 i ran the APC powerchute software and did a runtime calibration of the ups... this told me the estimated runtime of the batteries with the current load of the ups
172 minutes or 2.87 hours
here is my inventory of equipment i have on the tank
2 24" lights
1 150 watt heater
2 Aquaclear 1000 powerheads
1 magnum hot filter
so thats not a bad number considering all the stuff i have on there... it probably would be alot longer if i lost the lights and heater..... and had a new battery in there...
what do you think ?

Not bad at all.. I could live wit that.. My problem was the load I am putting on them.. 1 Iwaki WMD40RLXT, 2- Hagen 802 Power heads, 3- hagen 401 Power heads and a PH controller for the Calcium Reactor..
If I only had one pump, or some other less current demanding devices, it would probably last longer..

I have often thought about purchasing one of these for my tank. I have a 20H. The only things that I would want to run on it would be a heater and possibly a maxi jet 400. No big pumps, no skimmer, no lights. Just the bare essentials. I noticed that you have a 20 also, and I am very interested to know how your test turns out. If you can, or would want to, could you run it on new batteries with a heater and ph only? Not sure if this is feasible, but if its not too much trouble it would be greatly apprecieated.
Thanks
Justin

Let me just say about 3 weeks ago I purchased a UPS from Joey D. And low and behold my power went out we have been having these crazy storms in NY. I had just my filter on it and it stayed strong for about 4 hours. That is the only thing that saved my fish!
Thank a million!!!!!!!!!!

Guys,
I have ups' to sell and or trade....
lets keep the electric on !!!!
Joe

just go out and buy a inverter and a 12 volt battery and keep it charged and when no power get it out and hook it up or put it next to your tank and put a box over it and a flower on the box
power switch charger and battery cost 175 dollors, metal tray box and flower cost 200 its a investment that is over looked too often till it happens than people panic
