do a search on a similiar post like this.. everyone broke down there costs .. i know mine cam to ALOT of money and as said time,, i couldnt evan keep track if you asked me,, its always something.. but as stated it becomes and addiction you you become a FREAK with your tanks.. then again iw as runnign a 300 gallon agressive(400 total gallon) and a 125 reef.. the salt alone cost me but the huge bill is electricity and water...that was around $150+/- a month for me on tanks alone added to the rest of the electric bill to run a house.
a nano or smaller tank really only cost you about $10 +/- a month in electricity but some say its more time consuming than large tanks .. some say its easier.. all opinion
either way good luck on your decision..

Up keep time on my 90 gallon was 1 to 1 and a half hours every two to three weeks for a 20 percent water change and changing out filter material....plus 10 minutes ever couple of days to empty the skimmer. Feeding... a couple of minutes per day. Replacing evaporation 5 minutes every other day. Cleaning the glass with a magnet...a few minutes every few days while you look at your fish. If you make your own R/O water and mix with salt in a large trash can.....20 minutes every two to three weeks.
Money spent on chemicals and additives and salt...food, filter media, testing equiptment, books.....not to mention the tank, lights, skimmer, pump, gravel vac, R/O unit if you get one. Oh yes, and those 50 to 300 dollar fish. Lesley

Starting the tank is the most costly both time and money. Most people are so excited. Even when they do listen to us about taking things slow they still go a bit too fast. Get a qt tank and cycle it. A 20 gallon will work, if your tank is over 125 gallons then get a 20 long. Go slow and research. We are here if you need help. Please check out the rest of this site. There are forums better suited to ask serious questions. Who knows what kind of response you will get in "New hobbiest" No offense to the forum but it is for newbies and you are likely to get a newbie response to your questions. The other forums are for people who want honest answers to their questions.

Funny. I always thought it was for newbie-type questions that hopefully would get answered by people with experience.

You're right on the money; where else would you post the question that started this thread? In the disease section? If it wasn't to help ; why would experienced fishkeepers even visit this section? Most of the responses sure seem to be from experienced people. Here's how our host describes the "New Hobbyist section:
"New Hobbyists (290 Viewing)
A starting point for new saltwater hobbyists."

What do you mean? I think that a lot of people in this hobby for a long time like to read here just to answer the new peoples questions. Don't insult the people on this part of the board....I kind of took offense to your comment.

Lesley - I'm with you on that - although I have not posted many times I have been reading these boards for quite some time and several of the people responding to this thread alone (as an example) have made many very useful posts before and demonstrated an apparent resource of experience and/or knowledge. I found that remark to be highly offensive and totally inappropriate!
