Are urchins okay to have in reef systems? I couldnt imagine that they would be preditory, but I didnt know if they would be okay with corals because of their spines. I wold mainly be looking into the bali pincushion urchins and the longspine urchins. Thanks

I had 2 pincushion urchins in my 55 reef. They were fine except they would get into my zoos and then carry them all over my tank...actually might have been a good thing

I had pencil urchins and they ate my kenya tree...I have a purple pincushion, and it just eats algae...doesn't even carry my zoos...LOL

Im confused about what you mean carry our zoos. Like poke 'em and drop them off their spikes somewhere else? Wouldnt this kill the zoos?

No, they pick them up and carry them around. The big issue is that they are bulldozers, and if your frags or rocks are not secure, this can be a big problem.
Slate pencil urchins are likely to be predatory but others are not as much of a risk.
I generally do not suggest people keep the longspine urchin Diadema which gets very large and can cause serious wounds. The best urchin overall, IMO, is the blue tuxedo urchin.
Also note that water parameters and acclimation are very important.

They have clear tentacles that are used to move them, hold on to things, feel things and whatever else. They can pick up coral frags, snails, hermits or whatever they can carry and will move it to the center of their back. The aggrevation is they will run over pretty much anything but when they drop your coral frag behind some rocks and you can't reach it.

yea at first I thought it was kind of neat watching him carry my hermits and zoo frags all across the tank, but then the frags started ending up in hard to reach places or disappearing all together. I eventually just put him in my sump. He sure kept the sump clean

They also eat algae...ALL algae including the nice purple stuff right down to the bare rock. I absolutely hated mine. They killed my pipe organ coral carrying it all over and then drop them face down in the sand.
I took it back and got a fish instead. They are awful in my opinion. If you are mad at your coral and want to destroy the tank as a reef, that's the only time I would recommend these little sharp devils.

I dont want anything in my first tank that would complicate things to that extent. These ones are now off my list. Thanks everyone.
