Yeah; the classic individual fish thing. Some individuals do bother corals and some don't.........and some will leave corals alone for a long time and change sides. Unlike cats where they all are.......whoops, never mind.

Yeah; the classic individual fish thing. Some individuals do bother corals and some don't.........and some will leave corals alone for a long time and change sides. Unlike cats where they all are.......whoops, never mind.

Flame angel and coral beauty are the only dwarf angels that I would even try in a reef setup with corals. I have had success with both and currently have a flame angel who has never picked at any of my corals. I only have soft though and every fish can have a totally different personality. I made the mistake of buying a lemonpeel angel at the recomendation of the LFS and it was the most horrible fish on the planet. My polyps couldnt even open up at all or they would get nipped at. Took me about a month to finally catch him. Devil fish.

I had a raccoon butterfly at the reccommendation of someone...talk about a DEVIL FISH....it killed an anemone..ate mushrooms..

I currently have a Coral Beauty and he's more interested in being the "boss" than messing with my corals.. I had my Corals first and added with no problems. I also have had the Flame and Eibli together in my reef with no problems...HTH

I have a 1.25" Atlantic Pygmy (Centropyge Argi) and no probs. "Mostly" if they're well fed, they leave other stuff alone. That's a matter of the individual fish tho. I've heard of Flames picking and Lemonpeels that don't too. Bottom line is any of the Centropyge genus is a risk. The only Angel I know to be reef safe is the Japanese Swallowtail, but they're pricey, hard to come by and not a beginner fish.
For me, the fish went in before the corals. It looks at them, but doesn't care to eat them. It's happy cruising on the algae and pods in the tank.
Personally, I love Flames, but my tank is too small. Tank size may be a consideration as to whether they pick as well - idk. LFS has a 4" one in one of their frag tanks though. It obviously wouldn't be in there if it were eating their profits
Angel and the clown should not be an issue, unless the Clown is particularly aggressive and larger than the Angel.
For me, the fish went in before the corals. It looks at them, but doesn't care to eat them. It's happy cruising on the algae and pods in the tank.

I had a flame angel in my 65gal reef and it was a total menace. Ate pretty much some of all my coral until I took it back to the LFS. I had this fish for 3 months and it ate nothing except coral. Refused any prepared food, it liked the coral, there were plenty available and that's all it wanted.

Basic question: with all incredible the reef-safe fish available ( an amazing array of wrasse, anthias,clowns, tangs, etc etc)---why take the chance with an angel? There is no way you can tell if an angel is going to be reef-safe without trying it, and even then, it can change habits a year from now. The hassle of getting a fish out of a reef just isnt worth it, IMO.

with caution means dont do it unless you care about having the fish more than the corals or shrimp you have. everytime somebody buys a fish with the precurser "monitor with shrimp" the 1rst thing the fish does is go right to and eat the shrimp. when they say may nip at corals thats aka for you'll soon find out which corals they bother and which they leave alone. remove the ones they bother or remove the fish.

I added my corals after I had my Flame never has touched any of them.

"With caution" means that the fish is generally worth it, and if a few 'expendable' corals fall victim, so be it.
