Walmart 55g Tank

So I am in the process of upgrading to a larger tank and want to use my 55g as my sump/fuge. I bought this tank from Walmart and thought perhaps AGA made it. I called AGA and they said yes they sell to walmart and yes the bottom is tempered but the sides are definitely NOT tempered. There are a couple posts on here that say the opposite. Any advice from anyone with a walmart 55g tank that has had the sides drilled? I am going to do it...but would like to have some input first...

i have a walmart 55 as my main tank....the pet dep. mng has a reef tank in his house and is an old high school friend and according to him he has drilled several tanks including his......he tried to drill the sides of a wm 55gal for his friend and it shattered everywhere

From what I know the walmart tanks cannot be drilled. I tried to drill a 29 and it shattered everywhere. My LFS told me the walmart tanks have a green tag on the bottom (seen if looking from inside the tank) and that the glass was of a lower quality and cannot be drilled...

Ok assuming they are tempered...is there anything wrong with running a pipe up around the lip and back down to an external pump?

the problem with walmart tanks and some cheaper tanks is that the glass isnt that thick so any shift in pressure will cause the tank to buckle!!!!!
you can use a hang on skimmer box made to turn a non-reef ready tank into a tank that can utilize a sump or fuge..

. I want to use the 55g as a sump/fuge for a larger tank...i am just curious if I can use an external return pump by plumbing a line up and around the lip of the 55g back down to the external pump to pump back to the MT. Or do i HAVE to use an internal pump that is all.

I have read posts where people have plumbed up and around. I would imagine it would depend on the type of pump, or your method of priming it.

Just an idea, if you want to use an external pump but don't want to drill the tank. Get a piece of glass cut to the width and height of the tank, drill that piece of glass where you need the hole and fasten the new glass piece inside the tank making a new compartment that is dry.

You know that is a phenomenal idea. Thank you. will the pump vibrate the glass? its a blueline velocity pump...but then again i guess i could always pad the dry section...interesting thought.

Not sure about vibration, You might consider using rubber mounts under the pump to mimimize the vibration getting to the glass, as well as using a flexible pipe/tubing from the drilled hole.
This is just an idea, I have never done this so I can't speak from experience.

Still thats not a bona fide statement to say it was tempered. Folks are capable opf breaking 1/2" thick glass as well, as I done it already.

As I type this I am looking at a 29 gal wally world tank with the back drilled......
Cheap grade of glass is not a reason that glass can not be drilled. I would even wager a bet there is absolutely no difference in the quality of glass that AGA uses for wally world tanks than their premium line of tanks......seems to be more of an old wifes tale since everyone assumes if it comes from wally world its bound to be made cheaper since its sold cheaper.

I bet I have drilled 25 or more tanks already and have on onccasion also broke one or two, so that in of itself is not proof a tank is undrillable or tempered. Newer made tanks have a tag onthe bottom bringing it to yur attention the tank bottom or sides etdc is tempered. Look for the tag and pay attention to what it says. No tag, its not tempered.
Pretty darn simple if you ask me.

Go to Wally World, look at the tank inside the box. You would be best to open box and look at it, as big box stores do not have the greatest track record for handling items with care anyhow, so why rish dragging home a cracked tank......On the bottom will be a tag between the plastic bottom trim and the bottom glass. It will say tempered and often times state what part is tempered. If it does not have a tag odds are its not tempered. I have seen Perfecto and AGA in various wally world stores, and without that tech person at AGA knowing the model number etc etc (not just the size) its a shot in the dark. At one time who ever did make wally world tanks did in fact use tempered glass in various positions, Some had all glass pieces tempered, others just bottom. Reasoning was from what I was told was it was a method to keep folks from buying a cheap tank and drilling it......so it forced them to buy the drilled tanks at a higher ocst at lfs.....nothing to do with safety issues etc, more of a control of the trade and sales. Now at most allthat is different is the plastic trim and in some cases that is not even changed. Its just not profitable to run multiple lines to cater to a few customers when one line fits all needs. One time they used to run Hot point appliances on one assembly line and GE on another, in the same plant, now they all come down the same exact assembly line and get the differences added where needed.
Trust me there is a tag on new tanks if its tempered....

The mount pads on the pump should have holes in them. YOu can always use rubber grommets like used in electrical boxes to keep wires from getting cut to make rubber feet out of. They are usually soft and have a groove around them. Use silicone to stick em to the pumps base. Much better than setting pump on a rubber pad. Its also a good idea to use flex tube / lines / hose when connecting a pump etc to the tank etc as it reduced strains and twists and the transmission of vibrations.

The tag on the bottom of tank says do not dril bottom is tempered...when speaking to aga they first said only bottom then they said everything...isn't there a way to tell using polarized lenses?
