i can't believe no one has brought up about Walmart opening and the people going to strike or walk out. Darth Tang thought you would be all over this.

A friend of mine has worked for wal-mart for many years. Between them making her climb up ladders and lift beyond her ability while very pregnant. A couple friends and I are going to stand outside with signs, because it was made clear to her that if her, or her family are involved in any protests, strikes, walk outs it's immediate termination. They can't fire her for what her friends do. It's pretty sad that a multi-million, if not billion dollar company can treat their employees so poorly and pay so little that full time employees have to live on food stamps as well as government help, just to survive.
I quit shopping Wally world a few years ago, and won't look back. I wish I could do what they did in South Park to wal-mart.
Sorry, I had to vent a bit, because I hate the place and all that it stands for (mainly sweatshops damned near.)

If I were king I don't think stores would be open on Major holidays like Thanksgiving and July 4th. I'm not king though so they are free to do what is best for their store.
If it's so horrible then why work there?

Football players work the people who work in the stadium, TV and crews work on thanksgiving. I worked in the resteraunt business for 9 years we worked every holiday. I made 10 an hour what is the difference. People are getting spoiled.

Some people have no choice with the economy being the way it is, with raising families, and can't just quit. They have to sit and take it until something better shows up.

This will be the first time in my life that stores in my area are open on Thanksgiving, some of us aren't embracing the change to well.

Really nothing to say? i got to ask where near do you live that a convenience store or restaurant is not open. If my job told me to go work I would not think of it twice> I would just set the alarm and go in.
The problem is not the store but the people who will go shop that day at the store.

I live in the foothills of Colorado, and 7-11's are closed on Thanksgiving, as are grocery stores, resturaunts, gas stations, sporting goods stores, LFS, ect.. I just remember when Thanksgiving used to be more then a glorified shopping day. My family and I made it in the local paper by hosting a Thanksgiving event where everyone dressed as the pilgrims and indians. Over 100 people showed up to the event, and it wasn't about who can get the cheapest TV, or tools, or computer. It was a day to break bread and give thanks.

The truth is that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday due to the family atmosphere without the hoopla.
still the problem is the people who will go to save the 25 dollars and put it on a credit card and pay more in the long run.

PS. I'm not going to get upset, to each their own. Companies just keep sticking it to people in times that have always been family/friends time, and it kinda disgusts me seeing less and less care for the employee, and more about squeezing as much money as they can out. Last year on black friday the Wal-mart here opened at midnight, and that caused a stir in the area.
Also, how can one have a black Friday sale, on Thursday? Maybe rename it red Thursday or something...

I drove by Walmart on my way home from the in-laws last night. How disappointing to see so many people blow off a family holiday to save a few bucks on some Chinese crap.

I always hear a lot of very angry comments about working at Walmart, but I haven't heard specific things that I would feel is just wrong. The retail business is probably some of the hardest jobs, no doubt, but I'm not sure that Walmart stands out as the demon from hell store.
My feeling is that if Wally is so horrible, then look for another job. I'm not saying quit, because I know people just can't walk off their job. But if someone has worked there for years and hate the way they are treated, why haven't they just looked for another job and moved on?
I remember when Publix used to close on Sundays! My son works for the local newspaper, and he works every holiday without complaint. We celebrated Thanksgiving on Wed., his day off.

I'm quite sure your son is paid better than the average Walmart employee as well.....Walmart tactics or treatment seems to be nationwide, and easier said than done at times to just look elsewhere and go......In some areas that is the major employer......All honestly if Walmart is that bad why doesn't the consumers just limit the money they spend at Walmart.....Haven't been in a Walmart in 4 years and refuse to.......
