(1) are there other stories of this particular product causing fires, or is this the only one? I have used this same powerstrip for over a year and a half and have never had problems. from reading the thread, there is no evidence to show that it actually WASN'T user error.....the aquarist had the strip under the tank, where saltwater and/or salt creep could have gotten into it. Is this a common problem with this product, or is this incident one out of tens of thousands? If it were a common problem, I can't imagine a company would continue to market the product. (2) if it IS a problem with the product, what is a safer alternative? this timer has worked 100times better than the cheap timers from Wal-Mart. and if the powerstrips and timers from HD or Lowe's work better, which ones?
I know what you mean about that thread, and no you can't rule out user error, but you would think a company like Coralife would design and build a product knowing the kinds of abuse it might and will take in this hobby.....It wasn't as if he bought a cheap generic powerstrip for his TV and VCR,... I'm pretty sure alot of people are guilty of housing their powerstrips, surge protectors or outlet boxes, or junction boxes under their tanks.....Take a look around and you can find lots of threads with guys (people) building nice junction control centers inside their stands......Check around you'll find the threads, or people using the DJ control devices as well under the tank.....IMO that is just plain old dumb and retarded.......Golllly GEEEEE where the heck do people think this water in the event of an accident or leak is the water headed??????
Downward, so why in Gods name would we want are electrical connections housed under our systems?????? Get them up out of the way.
Personally I'd opt for the breaker right in the box, but that's me....I've seen a fair share of GFCI, that are junk, and what are people going to do anyways with them???? Plug power strips into them and overload them anyways and trip them!!!!!!!!!
Again just makes perfectly good sense to keep your outlets up from the flow of water or salt spray!!!!!!!

OK, now I am freaking out...In my 150G I have 2 heaters, 2 powerheads, a protein skimmer (hang on type), sump with 2600 pump, Coralife Compact light and NO ground probe. All of these are plugged into power strips (surger protectors?).

In my 55G I have 2 Emperor 400 filters, 2 heaters and flourescent lights with NO ground probe.
I looked at our breaker box and have no idea how to tell if we have a GFIC breaker. Are they individual breakers or is it the main one, and how do I tell? Do I buy the main breaker or the individual breakers? :notsure:
Am I ok with the power strip/surger protectors or not? AAAHHHH.
So, now that I am reading these posts, I am afraid that my YT and PBT are in trouble and may be getting HLLE. They are currently in a QT tank (the 55G) and have seemed fine for 2 1/2 weeks. But the last couple of days I have noticed that the YTs have these really weird little brown looking spots around their eyes and one of the YT has a strange looking red spot on his left white dorsal white spot. Only on the spot, nowhere else. It looks like it is a sore/ulcer.
Is this HLLE?
Any help and advice is greatly appreciated, before I give myself heart failure!!
Thanks!

Serioiusly though, what do you all recommend I do? Main breaker?
I am in the process of setting up a 220G also. Just got it so it will be a while before it's stocked.
