I think most people have their temp somewhere around 78-82. But it's just as important to have a stable temperature. You want to avoid a swing of more than a degree or two.

Same here... warmer temperatures means less of a chance of parasites (ich)

Not true - if the parasites are present then the temperature will not affect them. The lower temperature will affect the livestock however as they are "tropical" by nature and require warmer temps to thrive. The 72 degree mark is weakening the livestock and making them more susceptible to problems such as ich due to higher stress and lowered immune systems. Ideal temps are 79 - 81

should be 78-81 degrees, i keep mine at 80.
72 is a bit too cold for saltwater fish - some freshwater fish like goldfish enjoy cooler temperatures, but not tropical (saltwater) fish.

I can't get mine below 81. It usually stays around 82.5
Is this too hot
I live in FL. I have been on the lookout for some small hang-on fans, but it is January and they are not in the stores yet.
Thanks, Steve

If you only have fish 82.5 is okay, but if you have corals around 83 degrees they start dying off (not instantly over a long period of time).
If you HAD to choose between 76 and 82 i would choose 82 as long as it is constant. In reality you need to buy a new heater, or place a fan on the top of the tank to cool it off from 82 degrees.

Lex,
My heater is not the problem. It is not going on at all. I know I need a fan but haven't been able to find one yet. I believe I would like to be between 78 and 80 to keep everything happy. I plan on having a reef setup but all I have so far is a cleanup crew in there. Thanks for your post.

Well if it is not going on at all and your tank is at 76, i would say your heater is the problem. It is either broken, needs to be turned up, or is inadequate for your tank size. If you have that large of fluctuations between 76 and 82 then you need to turn up the heater (or add a new one) then you can add a walmart to cool it off from 82ish to 80 or 78.
Good luck!

Steve, what size is your tank? Do you have a canopy? Do you have a sump/fuge? What lighting do you use? I know heat is an issue in Florida.

To Lex & The Firefighter,
Lex, you have me confused with another poster in this thread. My tank does not dip to 76. It stays above 80 at all times. My tank usually fluctuates between 81 and 82.5 degrees. That's why I am saying that my heater is not the problem. I have it set for 78. Since the tank is always above that my heater does not come on. I have a 29 gal. No closed canopy. 2x65 watt pc mounted 3" over my tank. No sump/fuge. An emperor 400, two maxijet 900's and a maxijet 1200 inside an aqua c remora PS. It is just the temperature here in Florida. It is in the 80's most days and I have my AC set at 78 degrees for the house. Please don't tell me to lower my thermostat to 76 or 72 degrees. My wife wears PJ's at night because she is cold. Walmart does not currently have any fans for sale as it is January. They are still selling bathing suits though

Thanks, Steve
