So I have another issue (I seem to have a lot)
My water temp is 86 degrees. How in the world do you get it down?

If you have a covered tank...Uncover it....also you can put a small fan blowing across the water (for starters)
what lights are you running? and for how long?

I have MH but with no fish they are off. (tanks at 86 with no lights and everyone says MH will make a tank hotter so heck my temps could reach 90
) It's an uncovered tank so no fix there. Any kind of fan will work? Im panicking that MH weren't the smartest choice after reading about them and these suckers were expensive!!

WHy is it so hot them....what is the temp in your room? I have a 225G with metal halides and my temp runs 80-81....I keep the room 77-78 though, and a small 4" fan on the corner of the tank that comes on with the lights and goes off with the lights

Make sure you don't have a heater stuck on. MH get a rap as long as you have fans between the tank and lights to move the hot air you'll be O.K. I have 2 400watt 20k's over a 90gal. and my tank may get to 80.9 even with the Summer heat.

Its 76 in my house.. I have the heater turned on to 78 but it doesn't ever come on. Im gonna take it out and see if its broken.. (Its a subversive one with an orange light that glows when heating the water up. It has a dial at the top that you set the temp as. I've had the thing forever in freshwater so it might just be old)

I removed a lot of heat 2-3 degrees out of my tank when I stopped using powerheads in my DT and substituted it with a higher return pump and a spray bar on the return.
I like meowzer don't use a heater ither as my tank is naturally around 80 degrees. In a room thats 78. I do run a clip on desktop lamp with a florescent bulb on the sump, outside of that PC(for now, not ready for corals just yet)
I have a fan made for fish tanks(water proof) it clips on the side, however its on my sump/fuge and not the DT. Besides the are closer to the floor is cooler.
Be warned you will probably double evaporation with a fan blowing directly on the water, you want to just circulate the air above the water.

let it come down without the heater, if it gets in the desired range(or below) and you decide to add a heater back in add 2 smaller heaters, that way if one gets stuck on its not pushing as much wattage/heat transfer into you water, fans are a great benifit, and remeber that powerheads in the tank can contribute, so if its still higher than you want and you are using older pumps for circulation the spraybar is a great method on the return side or check into newer more efficiant powerheads. If you dont need it avoid the chiller route.
