How can you mix salt without a power head?
back in the day I used a 5 gallon bucket and a big wooden spoon
. Kinda hard to get any oxygen into the water without using some kind of pump, and I would circulate the water for a minimum of 24 hours before putting it into the tank...this also makes an alternate method difficult. If in a pinch I do what I gotta' do.

The salt settles at the bottom. A power head is needed to stir it and get proper gas exchange. An air stone just flows up. HOB's just flow down. That won't mix it properly. If the salt is not thoroughly mixed you can burn your fish and irritate your corals from the raw salt. Salt also releases carbon dioxide when it dissolves. You have to thoroughly mix it to get the carbon dioxide out and oxygenate the water. Power heads are not terribly expensive. I don't see why you would not use one.

Could you use like a small "quite pump" in the bottom of a 20g can? That is what I was thinking, it would mix the water / salt, and then I could use it to pump the water back in the tank...

The plastic painters mixer that you attach to a drill is hard to beat. Before the mixer I used a 1" piece of pvc to stir.
The important things to remember are:
Use cold water, preferably Ro/DI.
Never ever add "buffer" or any other additive.
Slowly pour the salt into the water, never pour the water into the salt.
Mix as hard as you can while pouring in the salt. You need to dissolve the alkalinity ingredients in the salt as quickly as possible to avoid Calcium carbonate precipitation.

Where can u get a PH for $10??
It dont have to be a big bad power head. Just something to make flow as far as 10 bucks I dont know. I got mine on here when they had the classified forum I got them for 8 buck each and that was the best 8 bucks I had ever spen. Well intill I got my crab for 8 bucks. (I always knew the lady at the LFS would give me crabs lol
) But I just put the mj 1200 in the bucket of water and then pour the salt in slowly and let it sit over night. The next day I do a water change. Even for 30 bucks for a new powerhead it is worth the money not to have to sit there a stir it. Just plug it in and walk away.

I have RO water in gallon jugs, could I just add my salt to that and put a cup on it and shake it up for awhile?
