Who said I was BBQing on gas? It is called realistic, I don't have time to spend an hour every night lighting some pecan wood, to grill steaks or fish on... With a propane grill I can have steaks finished in 35 minutes from when I take the steaks out of the fridge. VS 2 hours for anything on a real wood fire... This is just for ease of use, when I don't have the time to do some real cooking.
I'm getting a smoker too, for the real BBQ. And not one of those dumb electronic smokers. A 1/4 inch steel all welded, indirect fire box, probably do a 20" barrel and 36" in length.
I did look at the little gizmo you're talking about. And I do think it is a pretty good bang for your buck. The problem is I couldn't do more than one brisket, forget a rack of ribs, and 20 pounds of chicken along with it.
Besides that one, I haven't seen any other viable options, they're all poorly constructed, flimsy, and full of gimics, one grill I looked at had little led's to above the knobs for no reason, another had a crappy fridge. Those webers besides the rediculous prices looks like it will actually last for more than a year before I have to start working on it.
This Char-Griller is pretty sturdy, and made of some pretty thick sheet metal. I just like that I have both options. When I said 'gas', I meant propane. I cooked some steaks and chickens on the 3-burner unit, and they cooked real even, and didn't take long to cook. The only problem I have with it is I'm not too impressed with the thermometers that came with it. Not sure how accurate they are.
If you want a good smoker, look at the New Braunfels Smoker line. Academy sells those as well. I know big time smoke cooker's who swear by their products.

Get a small one unless you plan on doing a lot of entertaining. We got one of the 4 burners and we blew through tanks of gas so quick I bought a 2 burner to use. Cooking for 2 or 3 people you don't need a big one.
They also make a little smoker box you can throw wood chips in, maybe not as good as a real wood fire but pretty close and fast.

If I do a direct fire, usually I'll cook it really cool, I love a smoked steak. What kind of charcoal do you use to light that quick, even if I use a chimney it takes about 40 minutes to get it where I like it. (although that is pretty burned down.) About the only non smoked chicken I'll make is a drunk chicken.
Seems we both love to grill and BBq
I use Cowboy Charcoal Natural Hardwood Lump Charcoal. Fill my chimney with it place is over two paraffin litter cubs. After about 15 min I look at the chimney if the layer under the top is glowing red I dump the charcoal into the grill cover for about two min. (heating up the cooking grate)check the temp (hint the Weber I have does not have a designated temperature gauge so I use a deep fryer thermometer and place it into one of the vent holes at the top. When I get near 600 I take the top off and the up draft shoots the temp up and I am ready to grill. If I am grilling rib steaks I build a two section fire I double the Coal (searing) on one side and have a cooler side to finish cooking

I really like a 4 burner grill because I can shut off the two center burners and have a no hassle way of cooking on indirect heat or crank up all four burners and it will get up to about 475-500 degrees which is awesome for those home-made pizzas. Side burners are not very good IMHO because even at a low setting they are still too hot to simmer something like a pot of beans without burning the bottom.
I also have something called an Extreme Grill that was 40 dollars and is a huge grill that attaches to a stake and swings over my firepit. I much prefer it to my expensive gas grill and for grilling just about anything it is hard to beat if you have the time.

My brother just picked one up, he really likes it. I would probably go that route, but I'm at a spot where I have a chance to buy exactly what I want, vs just getting by. And that is just too small on the smoker side. I'm working in a fab yard, I've got a couple leads on people that will custom make me a pit for the price of the metal and a case of beer...

Crap, went last night, to home depot, Lowes, and sears, and no genesis grills in stock.
Ever order a grill online? I found one place that said no tax and no shipping...
Havent ordered online, but grills are pretty easy to assemble these days so I wouldnt hesitate. Just make sure they have an easy return procedure in case it gets damaged in shipping.

Well, I went on amazon, and they had the black 320 the one with the side burner for cheaper than the 310 without the burner. And they were running a sale 100 bucks off, plus free shipping. So I did it. With all the savings I picked up the cover.

Nice find! One of the fabrication guys at my shop is going to make me a new stainless drip pan for my Vermont Castings grill so I'll have that, the Weber and my charcoalwood smoker ready to roll for BBQ season!
This is the smoker I have

Please don't tell my you're throwing cold meat on the Q. It takes 35-45 mins just to bring the meat up to room temp...
P.S. Good hardwood, lump charcoal + a chimney = hot grill in 20 mins...

Is that you? I dunno what you 20 minute guys are doing but o have never got my charcole to stabilize in 20 minutes I could start in 20 but then it is still heating up. By the time I hit about 40 it stabilizes to where I can get a consistand heat And that is using a chiminy

I don't even use the paraffin. 2 sheets of newspaper in the bottom, lump charcoal to fill the top of the chimney (20-40 pieces - depending on size), 20mins max = 600°+. Good to go.
Whole nuther thing if yer smoking slow and low.
Either way, propane is not the answer
