FLOWER, I'll take a stab at that answer and say NO.....I do not think anything that's electrical should get so hot you can't touch it...
Except ballasts... magnetic ballasts can definitely get too hot to handle. If the ballasts are in fact magnetic, they are probably fine unless you notice a burning smell. They are designed to handle lots of heat without problems.

Okay, I went on line...
..Every 175w ballast for a mogul base MH lamp that's for sale must be spliced to work. $130.00-$160.00
That means my two ballasts are extra security after all.

REALLY...WOW.....I'm glad mine don't get hot like that....normal or not, I think it would scare the heck out of me.
Sorry Flower...I just always remember being told things should not get that hot

Just saw your post...
Thank you!
You have been a big help and this gives me lots of peace of mind. I will keep my extra ballasts for just in case. I am sitting on the edge of my seat to see if the replacement ballast will be able to start the right side like it should.
I really hope nothing is wrong with the lights themselves. So far as long as I run the left side first and have a warm ballast the right side lights right up. So I have high hopes it's just a ballast problem.
I wish I had that little prayer icon, or at least a cross your fingers for the replacement ballast to work when it gets here.

Agreed! I have tried to save that little prayer icon and I always loose it. You are always the one to bring it out.
I kind of held back on mentioning the prayer thing. My problems are so small compared to what others on the site are going through, but I'm glad he listens even to me and my little troubles..
