Maybe noteriety in the kook fring tree hugger world.
(there is LOTS of money to be made by "tree hugging")
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/...-climate-bill/
You make a name for yourself inside those circles, you could get paid to make speeches. Write books of your experiences, put in charge of some government eco program. Or hired by some corporation, after the tree huggers pull an "green" shake down on them...
Even if it is "volunteer" there are lots of future payouts...
Wow, I hadn't thought of any of this. I watched the show because I have always had a love for whales (really all marine mammals) and so I assumed that I would route for these people. I thought (before I watched the show) that it was some kind of official task force that was prosecuting the whalers. I had no idea that what the whalers are doing is legal. That makes me pretty sad.
So once the crazy people got on the whaler ship, what did they do? I mean what was the point of getting on the ship in the first place?

That is kind of the whole question...
They can only get on board and say "na na na", anything else would be considered the same as the Somali pirates. Just 1 broken piece of equipment and see how fast the whalers go after the others.
IMHO, this is just a recruitment tool for better "fighters"? just like the Al Jisheria (sp) news agency?

Just boarding the ship is an act of piracy. These guys are the same of those people who tear up labs where animal testing is done or burn SUV's on car lots. Some might agree with their motives but not many agree with the tactics and it ends up hurting the cause they are "fighting" for.

In terms of accomplishing anything, they are not much more than a few gnats...although gnats that are putting their lives and others at risk.
I am on my way to Kauai and looked into dive stores. One had some sort of affiliation or something with this boat and I will definitely not give them any business. Though I would be interested to see if they do things like feed fish to get them out or touch corals. then I would go nuclear on their a.......
I find some of these folks to be hypocrits when it is all said and done.
IMO, this will never succeed, nor will total bans. The international organizations that monitor whaling need to come to a conclusion to allow limited harvest of certain species (it can be sustainable, and they allow it for "aboriginal" harvest). They must find a mutual agreement so that they can, in fact, police it.

I agree Ophiura, the all-or-nothing mentality is childish and will never reach any goal. No good has or ever will come from this terrorism. This type of terrorism is the psyco-adult version of a temper tantrum.

That is about the best description of the mentality of these people I have seen.

I watch very little television but I do understand the show.
What I dont get is why do the whaling ships not destroy the people that are attacking them? No, I am not for violence but these people seem quie dangerous and unstable to be playing with in open water. The whalers seem to show incredible patience with them.
Anyone that has ever been to sea can tell you how serious it is when a ship comes towards you. It's a HUGE ocean, when another vessle comes towards you in open water it perks the hairs on your neck in a big way. When they are lunatics and threatening to ram you or board you.......no more fun and games.

Next time the Sea Shephereds try to ram one of the Whaling ships. The Japanese need to put a Harpon into her BELOW the waterline. I wonder how good their Damage control would be if that happened. If they got it on film thye could claim self defense.

Like it or not the whalers are not violating any laws and even if they were the loons on that boat have no business doing the things they do. What you are promoting is no different than a guy shooting up an abortion clinic because he thinks its wrong to kill unborn babies.

These pirate terrorists are not helping their cause by looking like idiots in my humble opinion. They remind me of PETA "helping" abandoned dogs by killing them.

You don't know me, my friend, and have no ideas what I or anyone else have done to make the world a better place...
The Japanese are working in a loophole in the LAWs which mean that the international regulatory body has left a loophole in the law. They also allow for "aboriginal" whaling for cultural reasons. Well it happens the Japanese also culturally eat whale. They are not allowed to do this as such. Driving around on a boat throwing rotten eggs will not change that.
There is real, meaningful civil disobedience....and then there is stupidity, violence, and meaningless risk to life and limb.
There ARE species of whale that can be suitable for sustainable harvest. You may not like the practice, but that is different. If you eat meat, there is an animal somewhere who even instantaneously, suffers.
The goal should be to direct the practice (because it WILL continue) toward sustainable species, or ban it outright, in every case, so you can really police it.
As those of us who have actually studied conservation biology know, a real impact comes in making sustainability a commodity. That means conservation is the commodity that makes the money for people who really need it.
Your line of "you would sooner shoot a human than a whale" speaks volumes for me.

Nobody said that they agreed with the killing of the whales. We were talking about the point of the show. The first line is very ignorant, as you don't have any idea what we have done to help save whales. I for one spent several all nighters helping save whales who beached themselves for unknown reasons. I did this in college as part of the marine mammal rescue society in college. Please don't make assumptions about the people on this board. I guarantee you will be wrong.
Also, the use of punctuation would be great. It would really help you get your point across more clearly.

Thank you for pointing that out. That post was almost completely unreadable.
