what am i doing wrong?

Ok i was just wondering, how long should a normal turbo snail live? i think that i am just buying tons.. and feel they should live longer... I do a slow aclimation using tank water and a bucket over 2 hours before i put them in.. maybe i am doing something wrong, but it seems taht i have to buy 30 to get 15-18 snails
also the LFS guy chastised me about how i clean my prefilter sponge.. so i would like to know what is considered the proper technique on this, since he was no help.

What is your salinity?

you should clean your pre-filter sponge with saltwater...biological filtration will be happening here and if you are using freshwater to rinse it..you are killing the bacteria needed.

ok... i have been flushing it with freshwater (how i was origionaly told to do it) ... the guy at the LFS just said i was doing it wrong, and if i didn't know then he wasn't going to tell me (@#$#$%#%) ok got that out of my system..
