What are the best greens for feeding tangs?

I'm new to this board. I live in an area that does not have good pet stores. What is the best kind of greens that I can buy at a grocery store to feed tangs? How much should be put in at once. Currently, 2 yellow, 1 Naso, and 1 blue. I've been feeding staple foods, kril and plankton but need to add more greens and need to pick up locally. Got suggestions?

hey RDC, welcome to the BB.
I feed my Regal tang romaine lettuce, when I had a yellow tang I fed romain as well...they love it. HTH

So HTH, how much have you been feeding and do you feed anything else to the tangs? Does anybody else have any other foods that they feed beside romaine lettuce?

Seaweed Selects is what most people use to feed tangs. You could ask you LFS if they can get this for you. However, you can also look for NORI, which is basically the same thing. This can be found at most grocery stores in the Oriental food section, or at a store that sells Oriental or health food.

I like to feed nori soaked in zoe. Nori is very much like seaweed selects but alot cheaper! Like beth mentioned, you can find it at oriental stores. If you can't find it, use the seaweed selects. I also use zoecon once in a while. Its supposed to help with head & lateral line deseae.
As far as how much to put in at each feeding, with that size tank and four tangs, i would hang two feeding clips, one at each side with a 6"x6" piece of nori folded up (so it doesn't break up and float away, you'll see what i mean). Just put enough on the clip that they will eat in one day. HTH

Everything you have read is great and I'll add one more item
Lifeline sell frozen cubes of red and green algea. I mix this with brine and soak it the local stores parasite punch..Garlic based item..I have not had any ick problems since I started using this.
Most areas have thir own version of this.
Also, my large tangs like chopped up silversides.....
Best of luck to you and happy holidays

DAily feedings of Nori, found at any chinese grocery store, is the cheepest, healthiest greens you can feed your tangs on a daily basis.

I have fed Seaweed Select Green Marine Algae from Ocean Nurtrition for about 4 years, it contains no romaine. Yellow and Blue Hippo Tang love it as well as the false eye puffer. I put in a plastice grid, held by a plastic clip. You can use suction cup or use a set of magnetic glass cleaners. Hook/tie the clip to that and you can move it up and down in tank without hands in water. ***** and That Fish Place carry it. Both have web sites.

I'll throw in my 2 cents. I put in 2 stalks of broccoli each week. I cook (nuke) it for 30 seconds and then attach it to a rock with rubber bands. My yellow tang loves to nibble on it, and its is amazing and fun to watch all the hermits go after it too.

The best foods for vegetarian fish are NOT land-based grrens use a food that is natural to them like: Seaweed Selects, Nori, or Julian Sprung's Sea Veggies. Romain and brocolli won't cut it in the long run! By the way, sanibelisland, I visit Sanibel once a year what a great place!

What a great thread... I was just wondering the same thing. My Kole does not eat Seaweed Selects, but my Trigger loves it!

Hey, to everyone that has answered. It is great that this kind of on hands info is out there. I love watching fish and hate to loose them. I will be checking out for items listed in the replys. Sorry to say that in my area, all that was available was the romaine, but all tangs are eating well and they are also eating plankton. I plan on heading to Lansing, MI this weekend and hopefully I can find some of your other recommendation. Thanks to all that responded so far. RDC30-06 :)

What and where do I get zoe? I bought some nori today and my tangs (Naso and Regal) went nuts over it. But i would like to try zoe with it.
Thanks

indo pacific farms have a renewable food source you can order from them; they state that if you order certain amount & keep it in say a 10 gal tank w/ standard lighting & OK filtration, you can grow it at home profusely & quite easily yourself
