I wish I could be of more help...what a pain in the butt. Keep zapping those bad boys...lazers sure sounded promising.

I was thinking...and please anyone chime in if I'm wrong
...but I was told years ago that UV lights kill the spores on hair algae and can help control it...MAYBE it could help control the spores of the aptasia??????? If memory serves, the UV light also killed the little good guys and outweighed the usefulness of the light on hair algae spores, but in your situation...destroying the spores of aptasia outweighs the usefulness of the little good guys. After you win the battle, you can always reseed the little good guy SW bugs.

At leas tit's something to look into
It's not a bad thought Flower but the lasers they are using are not UV, they are visible light, just a lot more powerful than your typical el-cheapo laser pointer. The Lasers do work, of that there is no doubt. I suspect targeting a photosynthetic animal, that is designed to absorb as much light as possible, with a strong laser will overwhelm the metabolism.

I know about the laser...that was explained before, it's a shame it wasn't an easy fix as fist thought.

What about the UV light...will it help kill spores from aptasia? I was thinking that if that would work then maybe she could slow down the count so she could catch up on killing them, and not be so overwhelmed. I know when I see aptasia, within three days I have 6 or more. She thought they were feather dusters, and they got a big jump on breeding unchecked.

I did an experiment with UV light several years back. It might be in the archives.

Based on those results I don't think UV light would have any effect on Aiptasia unless they were within a few inches of the water surface. UV doesn't seem to penetrate very far into saltwater.

You could try a Bristletail filefish. Also known as Jade Filefish, Matted Filefish, Matted Leatherjacket, Tomentosus Filefish, or Aiptasia Eating Filefish. I've been waging war against Majano anemones for years in my tank. I picked up one of these fish and he did a bang up job of eliminating all of the Majano that I could see in my tank. Then he moved onto the Leather corals....

From what I've read, most will eat Aiptasia and Majano anemones. Some will eat corals as well. Some don't eat corals. You just don't know until it's in your tank. I had to remove most of my live rock to catch and remove the filefish from my tank. Now I just use Joe's Juice constantly. It's a bit of a nightmare.

How long would you say you spend a week (aiptasia elimination)?

Hi,

I have never had a full scale overgrowth of aptasia like you are dealing with.

I did have quite a bit on a decorative column piece in my 56g, which I completely removed...washed and dried in the sun before adding it back into the tank.

The other day I noticed a big one way up by the output tube in my 90g...I zapped that one, using aptasia X, and a few days later noticed about 5 on my ships wheel decoration...I zapped those and haven't seen any since.

I keep peppermint shrimp in both tanks, the areas where I saw aptasia is higher in the tank. I think the shrimp stay low to mid tank.

So to answer your question...As long as it takes

I hear you can order peppermint shrimp and get something else. Ever heard that? Mine were really small and when I looked them up they say theyre bigger.
Hows everything going with you?

Boiling RO water works like a champ!! Slowly and i mean slowly... squirt it on the buggers and they will not come back...I have done this in my tank without any issuues..I only had a few to eradicate though..

Wow! Great, I'll try that today. Gotta keep up. Aiptasia X with lots of water changes works well, tank looks soooo much better but I ran out and they are popping up elsewhere. I want to keep up on it. Thanks so much.

With the boiling RO it does not matter..the heat from the water kills them, you're litterally boiling them to death ...as far as the other methods I think you need to go in the mouth for them to injest it..

OK. so that implies as much of it as I can. Body included? Here's the update of my almost daily battle. Before and after. Sorry pic's are such poor quality. All I have is my macbook. Thank you ALL for your help. This has been a group effort believe me! And I so appreciate you all!

Looks real good. Just keep your eyes peeled for another bloom. Did you put any pepermint shrimp in there?

I did. I actually bought 25! Many were very small and became lion fish food. (dwarf) The others I don't think fared well. 5 or so DOA. and found a few more larger ones dead. I hear there are different kinds, I thought the real peppermints were larger and had more color.

What you received were probably juvenile L. wurdemanni. They would have grown up to be fairly large given the chance.
