Instant Ocean from day one...I may consider the new Oceanic Salt. From what I hear its pretty good stuff.

Ive been using that for the last couple of months. I also switched from Instant Ocean.
I love the way it mixes in prep (very fast).. but as far as water quality it seems to be not much diferent that Instant Ocean was..

Would it be possible for you to post some alk, cal or other information from a seasoned mix of your new salt? I'm just curious.

Up until this past month, I used Instant Ocean for every tank I've had set up going back to the 80's. I recently started buying Oceanic salt as I've read great things about it, especially how quickly it dissolves, and I can pick up a 90 gallon jug for $24 versus a 50 gallon bag of IO for $18. I've yet to do a water change with the Oceanic yet.

I recently put in Salt Water directly from the OCEAN..
Is that good for long term, when should I change it.
What I did was go with my truck and 10 buckets to Miami Beach here in Fl. filled them up, and then got sand from inside of the water.
Later put the sand over the undergravel system, then filled it up with water..
Turned on my filter, etc.....
Now is that good. Or do fish like it the other way

I don't have any first hand knowledge so I can only tell you what I have read about this and I have heard you need to go at least a mile off shore to get your water to use in a tank, and you do not want to use sand from the beach to many contaminate's in it close to shore which makes sense if you think about it.

Yeah and I second that. If you are going to call people names then go somewhere else. I can't stand people insulting others for what they have done to their tanks.

instant ocean here
always had it always will.
as for the contaminant thing, it is hard to say where the safe zone is and that will definitely depend upon region, no doubt.
It does carry farther than most would think, while ina current(like a river outlet). BUT safe here may be 500 ft and there it may be 5 miles.
each area will be different. However, I would never use hand collected for this reason, and no matter how far out you go, you should not collect from near the surface, but deep water for reasons of contaminants. And i really doubt that in the gulf stream he is collecting sand, unless it is from an isle. Secondly going that far out is only done by big game fisherman or those in pursuit of something special, most charters run inshore to 20 miles. Those who run further are normally targeting fish that I think should be protected(but we wont go there, that is not the meaning of this thread or discussion), so in either case I would not respect anyone going out that far who is not doing so for research or diving AND i can assure you no one is runnig 100+ miles jsut for water. for that cost you could buy an RO/DI unit and enough sand for 6 months in most tanks(not including nanos, that would be even longer)

the posts that have been mentioned, did not flame or call names as have been done so here.
i will continue to remove posts that flame, name call or bring about controversy.
the other one was a challenge, and not even really a challenge but a request to see the results of a certain practice that is supposedly used and successful.

when i think of the ocean in all of its vastness, i consider the beaches to be the collection cups of protein skimmers.....
