I will try to get some pics up after work, but we have 3 dogs, Samson (Sammy) is the old man of the family. A Shepard Chow mix.
Hutch, This is my wife's Mothers day gift she picked, a Lab and ??? mix. (I think the ???= Great Dane, or Mastiff.)
Finally, the new pup is Shadow, He is a Lab Shepard mix, A great bundle of Pita fun.
Sammy and Shadow came from the Humane Society, while Hutch is from the SPCA.
We have had other dogs, but my wife will get tired the training and clean up, so we find other homes for them. All dogs have been from the SPCA, Humane Society, or the Pound.

Big dogs are great - my 2 favorite were a German Shep when I was a kid and I got a lab in college that my parents dog napped. The only problem is that bigger pure bread dogs can have a lot of health issues with joints and also problems because of lack of varience in breeding. Some of the pound puppies make fantastic pets.

Spiderwoman, the passing on part is the part that really gets me. I've had 3 dogs during my life, a Shepherd, Leo, 2 Boxers, Polly and Jazmin. The passing on of these animals was excrutiating to me, as it is to anyone.
My husband has never had a dog, from beginning to end, which I personally think is a tragedy. (What's a boy without his dog?) So, I'd love to bring this experience to my family. But he has no clue how much this animal becomes a part of your family. They are no longer an animal. They are people. With personality and 'tudes all their own.
Perhaps I get too attatched. Heck I baby talk my fish!
"How's my wittle Tangy-wangy dis mornin'? Want some pood? Is oo hungie?"

I'm sure I'll get lots of amens on the becoming people part from you folks. On the baby talk, perhaps not.

Guard dogs!! They think they are anyways. I voted big dogs but my two are both under 50 pounds. I'd like bigger dogs someday. My neighbor has a gorgeous English Mastiff.

I would go with a big dog . A bull mastiff or similar breed . I don't really consider a Doberman to be a large dog . Its a big dog but there are bigger dogs . Its on the high side of medium .
I couldn't agree more. Love the really big breeds. We had a Bouvier des Flandres, and he was the perfiect dog - great watchdog, loyal and loved children. Theonly problem was that the breed, generally, has a strong herding instinct but no fetch at all. My son used to throw a rubber ball and Gulliver used to look at my son strangely, like "you dropped it, you get it!". Gulliver weighed about 120 lbs.

Definitely have to go with Siberian Huskies - I've owned three different ones over the years and have always wanted to go sledding; this christmas, my dream came true
.

Is that cool or what?!

Max is our Cocker Spaniel we rescued from the Humane Society and Boogie is his sister who is a Australian Shephard.
Boogie we just got a few months ago. She is extremely intelligent. Too much for her own good. Lol...
Max is my little old man. He is starting to show his age. He was an older dog when we adopted him. He is the best dog ever!

Did you have to rent the dogs and sled? How does that work?
Yeah rented both as a unit - little place outside of Yellowstone on the Yellowstone River called Chico Hot Springs; you can purchase 2 hours, half-day, or full day trip. You go with a guide.

Yep I'm new to schutzhund, but not reefing. Fish and dogs are my life, and sometimes I'll even hang with the wife.
Schutzhund is fun, and about as costly as reefing. Both are a test of patience which is not my strong suit
