As far as my limited brain tells me only the pump need be in the sump if space allows move your skimmer out side the sump and plumb (pvc or tubing) from the pump anywhere you have it in your sump to your external skimmer. Just place the skimmer where the return water from your skimmer dumps back into your sump. Will this work? I guess so considering it is the set up I have in my sump
like this with pvc making a U upside down? or can the other way work as well?
How about this move your skimmer to the left out side of your refug put your skimmer pump and return pump side by side and you now have the whole right side to use as a refug
Of course it’s your refug but if it were I I would re- plumb the refug moving it to the right and put the skimmer out side on the left. In any event I would go with the skimmer out side no matter what and I am not sure what you mean by the bubbles
