Healthy live sand is the best filtration in my opinion.

IMO the best device is your own mind. Start as natural as you can as bang suggest. If that’s not enough go through the thought proses to address specific problems

A thriving sandbed and live rock. Add a good skimmer, and you're in the gold.
Some questions...: Does the type of sand affect its efficacy? And how does sand benifit the system so much if it is just laying on the bottom? I mean you can't point a power head at the bed to get water moving though it like you can with live rock; right? ? And? And does?

Man that happens to me lately..what is with this site??? lets try it this way..
Flower-
Nice sump/refugium. Good craftsmenship in building it by them.
Have you ever had a problem with 'junk' pilling up in one of you sumps because lack of flow around?
Answer: I don't have my new sump up yet..I have one sump and one refugium that drains into the sump...what kind of flow problem do you think I will have?
Where the wall(s) and bottom meet up in the corners, I was woundering if you had any waste building up, due to water going in one main direction.
Thanks

The important attributes of sand are that it be pure (100% silica or 100% Calcium carbonate), smoth grained (rough edges damage the infauna), and be of small grains, preferably a mixture of grain size from silt up to sugar sized.
A healthy live sand bed is full of live including detrivors and filter feeders. Althought these animals are mostly tiny, nearly microscopic, the sheer number of them is what provides the filtration. Their movement through the sand draws water through the sand bed.

I first started with a canister, bought the best money could buy..WASTE OF MONEY..lasted six months and what a pain to clean weekly sometimes more..bought a sump with built in protein skimmer with refugium, also use a hangon filter I make my own filters, plus 200+ pounds of live rock..Can't say how pleased i've been with this setup.
