I have been getting these sores all over my hands that are like blisters deep under my skin. They hurt really bad and arent going away very quickly. I have recently scrubbed some lr and every once in a while my crabs or snails knock a frag of button polyps off a rock and I have to put it back. Im going to start wearing rubber gloves when ever i touch anything but i was wondering what did it

alot of people get this my LFS guy has his fingers cut up and messed up from touching liverock and coral he wears gloves now, the other guys dont wear them.. just your fingers r sensitive to that stuff i would guess.

As much as I want to make a joke here... or a series of jokes...
There was actually a thread a little while back about a guy who suffered a severe infection from handling his corals. By the time he sought treatment, they actually considered having to remove his finger if the antibiotics didn't take care of the problem. Not to freak you out but this can be very serious. I would seek medical attention right away. JMO.

Yeah there was a guy on the Michigan site that had the lines of blood poisoning going up his arms. He was on different antibiotics for quite some time to try to beat the infection. Is that the one you are remembering Crimzy?

I've seen a few of these articles/stories and know which one you're referring to. Doctors don't know everything and some of this stuff will be foreign to them which makes getting treated a pita. It's like having the amazon rainforest in your house. People don't live there, so the diseases aren't commonplace.

I still have some knots/lumps on my right pinky finger from a coral sting 2 or 3 weeks ago. I think it was my torch, but I was kinda close to some palys, too. Anyway, they were isolated to one area. If you have general sores where you contacted the water, I would lean toward allergic reaction to the water (and it's makeup) rather than stings.
Either way, take some Benadryl if possible.

Now that i am sufficiently freaked out, I guess I will make an appointment with the doctor! I know I dont have a staff infection though. Just little sting like spots on the tips of my fingers. This makes me think that it was from handleing something. They are barely even visible, they just hurt because they seem to go really deep into my fingers and they itch like crazy. I do also get little rashes on my arms when i reach in the tank, but this is different. Well, now that i look at them my fingers are swollen.... ok making doctor appointment right now. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Let us know what the doc says, please, because I'm getting tired of my hands being in such awful shape, too. I have had occasional minor bouts of eczema and some chemial reactions under my rings in my lifetime but ever since I started this hobby I ALWAYS have a few areas of my hands that are rough, itchy, cut, roughened, and other mysterious "bumps". Some of them are like swollen callouses and I end up picking at them and then sticking them back in the tank, etc. I figured this was one of the trials and tribulations of the hobby but if it continues to be a regular thing I may have to get it checked out, too.
