Clowns are all born male......the dominant in a group, even a pair, will become the female, and the next dominant will become the breeding male. If the female dies, the breeding male will step up, and turn into the female, and the next in line male will breed. Best bet IMO is to get two very very juvenile clowns so you know both are male, and then hopefully the dominant will turn female without too much fighting....they will fight to secure dominance. You can get a two from seperate tanks, and have a serious mismatch if the smaller less dominat, was the dominant in another tank, and is the female, or you could get two females.........two very small juvis are going to be male. An established pair would be nice too, and save the trouble.:)

Yes and quite quickly. Get the book ;) money well spent.
Clown are easiest to breed but Banggai are much easier to raise the fry. Clown fry are vary very tiny.

:( ok, im gonna put the clowns in a 30 gallon tank with a 10 gallon sump filter, and then bpuit the fry, if there are any, in a 20 gallon

They shouldent need substreate, just make sure the water in thank with the fry is the same as the water in the parent tank, unless there is a deisease in there.

It is a very good book.

Get the book - read the book - she covers EVERYTHING ....
I have a pair that I thought about breeding but I just can't get them to lay eggs. Like everythign else it takes patience!!
All Clowns are born so that they can morph into a dominant female. In almost all of the clown species the larger of the two is the female .....
You can also buy breeding pairs but that gets expensive!

Hey Bang Guy.....if you read this again.....please repost that pic you had awhile ago with the baby "bang guys" in the urchin..please please.:D One of the cutest coolest pics I have seen....they were yours, right?

Not that long in the newspaper there was an article on aquaculture at some college here in RI. They set up to breed percula clowns and i think it said it can take up to three years before they will start to breed.
Is that true? or did i get mixed up with something else?

Do you feed your bangaii's live food exclusively or do you feed them your homemade mix??
Read the headlining article there on breeding bangaii's ..... did you feed your fry live food exclusively?? Also - did you turn yours lose or use breeder nets?
