Wow. This thread is funny. How many threads have I seen like tihs before?
Let's get a few major facts listed here:
Nirvana do not have bad music. You must have 'music' for it to be bad, no?
I think we've got the Metallica thing down. PreLoad is good. Anything after should come with more of a warning label than explicit lyrics. Sorry 'tallica, your my favorite band, but Jesus.
-end of musical facts, for now.
My opinions:
If a band or musician is going to get anything from me, they better at least understand music. yes, the repetitve power chord progression does get a little old. Power chords are okay, but God use them differently! Not many other chords sound that good when you get the gain going anyway. If you've ever tried Jazz or anything like it on distortion just for fun (discluding leads), you'll understand.
Jazz- Good stuff, as long as nobody sings! Also, some of the solos that I hear are less than imaginitve. Most have been good though, they get A's from me.
Country- I don't like it, but some of them are okay. You know the ones that at least attempt using a pick! No rating, becuase I'd have to hear and play a lot more of it to do so.
Punk- F No imagination, no musical understanding at all. Not even a good singer. Bass usually plays the same thing as the guitar, and the drummer could get by playing something else simultaneously. Nirvana and all other grunge included.
Goth Rock and Techno- Again, F. The point of talent is to play live, and do a good job of it. Music was invented to be shared, not self enjoyment.
Metal- As long as they can double pick and occasionaly solo, sweet. Nu-metal should be shot for the most part.
Death metal and Black Metal- Death metal is too bland for me. There are a few select bands that I enjoy such as Meshugga and Archenemy. Other than that, not too much. Black metal is more my forte. (Yes, there is a difference) I like it more because it implies more classical music elements, more pure music. Guitar music is often time different, as much as they shouldn't be. Listen to a guitarist freehand a solo, then listen to a saxaphonist freehand a solo. Different style totally. I would say that the guitar is probably the most susceptible instrument to fall into that dreaded scale pattern. Black Metal catches me more because it doesn't always have the guitar music. It's more classical revolved. The huge fault to Black Metal is they aften times run out of ideas and end up using the same musical phrase for too long. Or even worse, no particular musical phrase at all! I'll give'em a B-.
Classical- Same fate as Black Metal. Beethovens 6th is the worst song when it comes to now particular musical phrase. 20 minutes of ass! Best song ever was Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain. (In the perspective of Classical) B-.
