I noticed this today. I check my water and it is within parameters. No other live rock has this on it. It is a reddish, orange stuff. Sorry for the bad pic.
Funny, i have something similar but it looks like a red and white fuzzy ball. Interested to know what you or Ii have. I would take a picture - batteries dead.
Coralline algae perhaps? Looks like I see some purple in the picture as well. If so then it's a good thing. My goal is to get my rocks covered with the stuff. What kind of lighting are you using?

I had some green algae it was coraline...BUT it started as green and that had me confused...then some of it converted to the pink colors we see all the time

Looking at that pic, that is not hard. Take a turkey baster and blast at it straight on. Does any of it blow off?
I'll try again tomorrow. To tired tonight. Thanks and please check tomorrow for results.
i agree with lord fu fu... if it's red, soft, and can be blown off then it could be red slime.. which is a nuisance.. but since you've rubbed it and it is hardened... then it's a good sign... coralline algae is pretty much the only algae you want in your tank...
