because just this morning i got home from work and noticed my new cleaner shrimp was dead

did the acclimation like the site said and water testes fine(i know because i retested after finding it did all tests) and i feed them all correctly too for some reason it was dead though
I had the same issue... I bought a cleaner shrimp and followed the acclimation procedure to the letter. He didn't make it through the night. I noticed him dead the next morning, but didn't have time to take him out, as I was running late for work. So I planned to retrieve him when I got home. Well, I got home, and found that his body had drifted into the clutches of my anemone. No chance of getting it back now. Anyway, I e-mailed swf.com and let them know what happened, and they quickly issued me a claim number to apply to my next order. I now have a new...and very happy, healthy cleaner shrimp! I haven't been ordering from this site for long...but so far I am very pleased with everything!

I don't know about your state, but here if you want to use well water in your house (especially for drinking and cooking), you have to do a lot more tests on it. They usually test for different hydrocarbons, etc. Also, total solids is a big test for using the water for your reef tank. Do you have an RO filter? Is the well water filtered?
the anemone is gone

i liked the little guy but it was for the best
i have a facet filter to cut down on particles but that is it ASAP i will get me a RO system just not yet spent all my money already

ok
i have to say mexican turbo snails kick ash!

they have already cleaned most of the hair algae off the rocks
but they just dont seem to like the brown stuff on the top of the sand im starting to do my 10% water changes weekly at least i will try
i cut down on my light time and dont feed them as much only every other day and see if that helps
i have been vacuuming off the algae with a hose connected to my intake to my canister filter(cascade) and right after that i clean out the hole filter to get rid of the nasty stuff
but it is doing better
CLEAN UP CREWS DO MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE!!!

can someone tell me something
ok i got my Red Sea phosphate testing kit and it says that it o 0
now is this type of test accurate?
because as you see i still have algae and in time as my tank gets matures will it decrease
also as i add more live rock will this make my algae come back until i fight it away again or does the curring in a seperate container for a while help with that?

Keep cleaning, and reread the advice, perseverance, my friend, perseverance. There's tons of other threads about algae problems in gerenal - just keep reading and keep up the maintenance. You'll get there.

the thing abuot testing for phosphates is you can get a result of 0 because the algae is consuming it as it appears so you keep under a testable amount but they are still coming in and being consumed. its like ammonia, in an established tank you never see it but it is there in low amounts usually it breaks down before reaching a testable amount.

thank you both for your help i will do that
the next thing im getting is LR i might order it from here
i bought 30lbs from a place in springfield only 3.00 a lb but didnt seem to have alot of coraline algae and is the reason i got hair algae in thje first place so i think im going to speed the money on grade A rock like from here hopefully in a few more weeks

thanks again
all of you

ok i decided on not getting my LR yet instead i got a RO-DI system i think it was a smart choice
well with my cleanup crew they kicked but on the rocks!
but nothing is still touching the sand bed that is the big reason im going ahead and getting the RO unit instead hopefully with constant water changes and cleaning the surface of the sand i can rid my tank of this prob

but here you can see what a good clean up crew can do!!
my rocks were pretty covered before

What are your new test results for Phosphate?
When my tank was 6 months old and the sand was really dirty (algae), I started removing a lot of it from the tank. Now I don't have that much at all. Only around 1/2 inch deep. (my next tank I would like to try a mildly deep sand bed with a plenum)
I cut some corners with my sand too. It was just cheap play sand that bubbled when vinegar was added, so I figured it was calcareous and not silica-based. I'll probably never really know if it mattered however. It's not a deep sand bed, and it is what it is. The blue-leg hermits sift it for algae, and the tank is well established now.
If the sand is driving you crazy, just vacuum some of it out when you do water changes. Do you have one of those siphon vacuums? If not you can just use vinyl tubing to siphon it out.
I haven't read this thread in a while so I'm not sure about other things. Maybe you have lighting issues?

Is your SG 1.24 or 1.024? I think that was a typo in your first post.
How old are your actinic light bulbs?
How old are your 150W MH bulbs?

I just added my CUC yesterday and like you noted they mostly stick to the rocks. I did buy one tiny blue leg hermit and he was working on the sand when I went to bed and when I woke up. The snails like the glass and rocks and my scarlets barely move but stay on the rocks so far. I really didn't want too many hermits let alone blue legs but I may have to get more as they seem to work the hardest so far.
For what it's worth.

150s are couple weeks old replaced them 1st
actinics like a little over a year
still waiting on my salfert test kits (among all other goodies i ordered
) but with my other test it showed 0
but ive decided to buy a phosban reactor because i know i have phos.
just hope it works with my canaster filter a cascade 1200
do you know
but as i said earlier the sand and LR and pretty much everything to get me started including his live stock came with my purchase
so i inherited his problem unfortunately
thanks
