Well, since we've strayed away from hermit crabs and mice....
SNAKE!! My favorite animal, most definitely. Get a little baby ball python. They are little jewels!

ok well, i have o say no to:
snakes (i/ my mom would flip if it got out)
horse (cash issue)
chinchilla (so cool, but don't know the anything about them)
birds (possibility, but i would have to find room for the cage)
dog (got one)
maybe a lizard of some kind, but still thinking of the rodents

RODENT! either a hamster or a rat. rat's are really friendly, but u have to get ur hamster use to being up in the day time or he will sleep all day. dont get mice, they are too small to play iwht and very fast if it gets away from u....maybe a gerbil?
but by no means get a snake! they are nasty as hell

i love my little Elmo, he's 2 years old:D

Take it from me. I own a zoo at my house and here is the breakdown of what I got.
5 Cockatiels
1 Quaker Parrot
1 Eclectus Parrot (had 2 but donated one to Local Vet)
6 Hermits (land)
1 Betta Fish
1 baby zebra danio (the only one to survive)
about 20 baby sailfin mollies
10 gal. fresh water tank with fish
20 gal. salt water tank with LR and fish
I have also owned......
Hampsters
Rats
Snakes
Gerbils
Dwarf hampsters
dogs
cats
ferret
Here is my outlook on all of these.
Cockatiels: Messy, loud, friendly, nice to look at, can play with to some extent. Expensive. Can live up to 15 to 30 years.
Quaker Parrot: Do lots of reading on these before hand. They will run your house and life. Fun. can take walks with you (if wings are clipped). Very loud. Comical. Can talk. Does not play well with other birds (very dominant). Read, read, read. Expensive. Can live up to 15 to 30 years.
Eclectus Parrot: Very colorful birds. Can talk very well. Tend to only bond with male or female (person). Lots of care (diet, beak trimmings, nail trimmings), expensive (large cages, food). Can live up to 20 to 40 years.
Hermits (land): Fun to look at but not much fun in the handling department. Quite boring. Spend most of their time hiding in their shells. Low cost.
Betta Fish: Very easy fish to take care of. Colorful.
fresh water tank with fish: Your on this site so this should be familure to you.
salt water tank: Ditto from above.
Hampsters: Can play with, fun to watch, comical, smelly if cage not kept clean, can bite, relativly low cost in supplies and care.
Rats: One of the most smartest rodents. Playful. Can train to do tricks and in some cases potty train. Tails DO NOT feel slimy, there dry like skin with no hair. IMO, very nice pets. Cages smell if not cleaned regularly. Low cost.
Snakes: Depending on what kind, very nice pets. Stick with BOA's (i.e. red tail, columbian) or Pythons (i.e. Pall python). Hardly any cage smell. Cage cleanings about twice a month. Low cost in feeding (they only eat about once per month (summers) and about once every other month (winters)). Can hold. Can take outside and let roam your yard (check them over for ticks or mites when done). Eats live foods (i.e. mice, rats, rabbits (if larger snake)).
Gerbils: THEY BITE. NASTY LITTLE S.O.B.'s. Otherwise same as hampsters or rats.
Dwarf hampsters: Same as hampsters and rats.
dogs: You have them so you already know these.
cats: Cute, cuddly, not as entertaining as dogs. Boring. Will not do tricks, fetch paper or shoes and will not get that beer out of the fridge for you. Can be expensive depending on the type of foods and vet care.
ferret: Very entertaining. Mischief. Get into anything. If head can fit in it their bodys will to. Can hold, play games with. Basically, just like having a little puppy all the time that gets into mischief. Can open your cuboard doors. Some odor even after desenting (not much). Cages smell if not clean often. Can take for walk (with proper lease/harness). Can be costly (cages, toys, etc.). Must have lots of things to play with or they will find things you don't want them to play with. Very fun.
Hope that helps your question. Sorry for the long post.

They are not! They are one of the most diverse and beautiful creatures on the planet. Looks like someone is just jealous. Hah.

JGonier... juvenile snakes must eat once a week, not once a month. Larger, older boas and pythons must only be fed once a month. :)
As for lizards, leopard geckoes are a very pretty and very docile beginner reptile. They are very easy to take care of.

Anyway, since snakes are out, chinchillas are really cool. Here:

snakes
rats  Thank goodness for people like Kitty! Somebody has to love and care for those creatures.
How about a frog? Our neighbor has 2 little frogs in a 10 gallon tank. Kind of cool.
JGoiner, loved your post!! Those birds crack me up, I wonder how many out live their owners?

Thank you. Many of the larger macaws live for more than 60 to 80 years, so if you bought one at the age of 30 (your age not the bird) then it more than likely will out live you. Better put that in your will for someone LOL.

AGH!! GOD those things piss me off. At the pet store I used to work at, I'd be cleaning their cages and the little f****** would bite the crap out of me for no reason.
*Shhhhh I used to feed them to the snakes*

Someone came into the store once and asked me if I wanted to take their 6 siberian dwarf hamsters. At the time, I had two ball pythons and a savannah monitor. Needless to say, I took them. My monitor, my ball pythons, and even my cat had a few good snacks that night.

Nasty little

especailly YOU! anyone that can deal with rodents and snakes (YIKES :scared: ) have a special place somewhere for caring for them. I just can't bring myself to be around them. At our local pet/fish store, I COMPLETLY
avoid the reptile isle. OH and those hissing ---- roaches and other BUGS!!
ACK!!!! those too. He has them also.

get a ferret, I have two and they are really cool! the only problem is they poop A LOT!!! I think of my ferrets as a tooth paste container, well, you get the picture.
Other than that they are really cool and playfull. They are very social animals and will play for hours at a time. Well thats my suggestion, hope you make the right desicion.

yes they do!! still in the rodent family, but ours (charlie) was pretty cool. he used to crawl behind the fridge and also found a way to get in and behind my kitchen cabinets :scared: i ended up having to get rid of him for reasons that have nothing to do with his behavior. very cool as far as rodents go better than the hamster/gerbil/rat IMO
as far as snakes go, i doubt your mom would want mice in the freezer

an old friend of mine had a pot belly pig, but it didnt last long with her, she had to much stuff and couldnt deal with it (kids, 2 dogs, fw fish, snake) but it was cute.

If your looking into getting a lizard a lepord gecko would be the best choice they are easy to care for. How about a turtle like a box turtle.. I had a box turtle 3 green iguanas a chamelion and lepord gekos. I love my chamelon but if it is your first pet its not recomened i say go for the lepord gecko, they look cool and thery are easy to care for a great bigginer lizard.
