I'm looking at the octopus NW200 skimmer. Any opinions on this skimmer for a FOWLR with some corals later on.....not a full reef?

I run this skimmer in my 180g and I have a full/mixed reef. It does an awesome job and works twice as hard as an ASM rated for the same size tank.

So many people say they have great experiences with certain skimmers or say they've had bad experiences with the same skimmers. How is one supposed to choose??

lol, search for something like "best skimmer" it can be pretty funny watching them go back and forth.

When you look for medium quality skimmers you see the fluctuations in opinions, but when you go for the higher end, you usually don't hear anybody complaining about their skimmer. I haven't seen people complain about Bubble King's, Deltec's, LifeReef's, H&S's etc.

a G4 has the same pump on it. if you were going higher than a G4 i'd choose the G4X, but i don't think an inch or two taller chamber is going to make a tremendous difference. not enough to warrant another hundred dollars.

I'd be surprised if anyone had anything bad to say about an Octopus. While ASM might be good, for the price range the Octopus will have better skimming because it's made of acrylic and not plastic.... there's something about the way water retention works in both that makes acrylic a better choice. The other skimmers that use acrylic are usually listed at twice the price. There are also some people who get the ASM and mod them, while the Octopus is good right out of the box. The only ones I'd recommend staying away from though are the Red Sea skimmers.

WIth that large of a sump you have a lot of options...I really like my Aqua C EV 240 in my 240 FOWLR......High production, and very user friendly. ASM would be a great choice for you as well, you would have room for the G4.

so...monk- you are saying that a skimmer made out of acrylic skims better than one made out of plastic?
i have both, an ASM and a EURO-REEF. they both skim EXACTLY the same.

That's what I've been told. There's a member here (trippkid) who used to setup tanks locally as a job and he once explained how the acrylic and plastic had different water retention and why the acrylic is better. I wish I was smart enough to explain it too, but most of what he said was over my head and I can't remember it.

Anyway, it was that conversation that drove me to get the NW200 for my 180 instead of the ASM G3 or G4. If yours both run about the same I'm not sure what to say other than cool deal.
Another thing I thought about too is that if the NW200 even does do just as good as the ASM (and not any better), you're still saving anywhere from $100-$200 with the NW200.
