What would be a good tank size to start with

I was wondering what size would be a good size because my dad says 29g but im also hearing 55g from other people so I just want to know what you guys started with your very first fish tank and what your experience was weather it was good or bad.

There's a saying: "Nothing good happens fast in a saltwater tank." The smaller the tank, the faster bad things happen because of the smaller water volume and the harder it is to control and correct. For newbies, larger is always better.

The bigger the tank, the easier to keep stable. However... a 75g is a much better choice then a 55g, because a 55g is so narrow. Both tanks take up the same space, the 75g is just a little wider, making it the better choice. I started with a 55g and within a couple of months upgraded to the 75g, the 55g just wasn't good at all. Years later I upgraded to a 90g...all 3 tanks are 48 inches long, so I used the same lighting equipment (the most expensive piece of equipment) on all 3.

Agreed I still have my original 75 going. Ive gone smaller tanks since, but due to space. Once my basement is done its big again lol

Ok so I sounds like 75 is the right size and how long is the 75g. I'll have to nag my dad to get that 75g instead of 29g because it will be a reef tank so that wideness really got me wanting a 75g.

I think a 40g breeder is a good beginner tank, personally. They usually have sales on them at the big box stores for $1/gallon. ($40).

They are wide enough to do a pretty good aquascape, but not too big to take a lot of time to take care of. they are 36"x18.5"x 20" I think. They make pretty good little tanks.

29g is fine, just very limited. Since you have to go with what DAD says...LOL...wait for that bigger tank when it's your pocketbook. Your dad is awesome to let you have the 29g.

i agree with snakeblitz33. a 40 breeder would be really easy to aquascape and take care of. i almost got one just too many limits on the fish i wanted
