if that's a stab at me i'm not old, i just know what i'm talking about when it comes to the more expensive equipment maintenance. a $30 refractometer will ultimately save any hobbiest money when compared to buying a half dozen hydrometers. it also will be tons cheaper than all of the equipment and continual supplies needed to keep a probe system going correctly.
if you've never used one, it's a quick dip. unlike your metal probe that usually stays in the tank. pretty ugly. i assume your lead thing is your thermometer. nice. keep on keeping on at whatever you think you're saying.
oh and i'll bet my holding that thermometer in my tank by hand is much safer and more accurate for my animals than your stick on. it also doesn't remain in the tank so to add to the fake environment you like.
otherwise peace out flamer.

i dont want anthing in my tank longer then it must. I want the natural look. ... besides that comment... love the sassyness with the hint of sarcasticness and the aftertaste of smack down..... i thought it was highly entertaining and sounds so much like myself that i felt right at home !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"otherwise pease out flamer" OMG I AM LAUGHING MY A*^ OFF

what i tell people that come to me and want to start a new tank is this.
"take a 100.00 dollar bill. ball it up and walk outside and toss it in the street. turn around and walk back in. IF you can afford to do that and not care then get into salk water fish tanks. because you will through away more then that more then once in this hobby" lol.
as for equipment i feel the skimmer is the most important item in a tank.
i feel the all following equipment is a must have
Tank<-- duh
RO/DI unit<-- there is a reason most long time hobbiest will tell you they wish they would have started with ro/di
good salt<-- i like tropic marine pro
refractometer<-- the plalsic hydros are crap and a waste of cash
Good skimmer<-- DO NOT skimp here. if that mean waiting to set up your tank so you can save some cash then WAIT. you will be very glad you did
GOOD lighting<-- once again dont skimp
Qt tank
if i dont have all of the aboev i dont think its even worth starting the tank
as for other dry goods
Nice array of nets<-- the nicer plastic fine mesh once are best
High quality mix of food. <--i use dryand frozen and make up my own blend and then refreez it.
lots of 5 gallon buckets<-- fish room dedicated ONLY. dont let the wife steal em lol
water jugs for mixed and fresh water
mag float<-- love these damn things
before all of this be sure to READ READ READ and when you done with that READ SOME MORE! research EVERYTHING BEFORE you buy it. you will be VERY glad you did.

about the refractometer I noticed there are many types with different accuracy. What is the minimum accuracy you need for a tank?

When maintaining your tank always have an ice cold Samuel Adams with you. I use them during water changes, acclimation, feeding, water tests. It really takes off the edge and helps ensure quality work.
