What's going on at Budweiser?

Was checking out at the local Safeway yesterday and got a coupon for Chelada. Apparently Budweiser mixed with Clamato Juice!
Is this new or did I miss it? What are those crazy people in Holland or Belgium or wherever Bud is owned doing?
I kept the coupon mind you....I'm intrigued. I have never like Budweiser so much, perhaps the Clamato Juice can make it better.

The drink itself is not new. I know lots of people that add tomato or clamato to their beer. I think it is a scandanavian/northeastern European thing.....Taste like crap to me...

My stepdad used to drink snappy tom in Budweiser once in a while. I never really cared for Bud anyway. They use rice in their beer, Blahhhh.

I think a beer with Tomato or Clamato is typically called a Red Eye

Wonder if it will catch on with the Budweiser Nascar crowd.

That is a mexican thing. I've never consumed Bud's version. But there is this AMAZING oyster bar in houston. If you're ever in houston GO THERE. Best gulf seafood in houston. (It is all fried) And they make them. But instead of just tomato juice. They use Cajun chef, lime and salt. Then for good measure toss in an oyster... It isn't for the "I don't like spicy food" people.

:
A red eye has an egg in it. (thats where the eye comes from you look at it in the glass and if it looks back and you dont puke you drink it to cure your hangover) other wise its just a chelada.

chelada
Things You'll Need
* 12oz bottle/can of Beer, preferably a lager or light beer
* Tomato juice -- Bloody Mary or Caesar Mixer work also
* 1 pinch salt
* 1 pinch pepper
* 1 splash Tabasco
Steps
1
Step One
Pour beer into cold pint glass or frosty mug, make sure to angle mug 45 degrees to discourage foam.
2
Step Two
Add 1 cup of tomato juice to glass (can add more or less depending on desired taste). Another great option in Bloody Mary or Caesar Mix----Clamato works as well

[hr]
and of course there are a dozen or more varying recipies for each.

What is it about Mexicans and placing fruit in perfectly good beer?
Lol - I'm not sure the origin is Mexican, but I've been drinking a variation for years. I use V8 or Bloody Mary mix along w/ hot sauce, Worcesteshire, lime, pepper and some pickled asparagus to stir
A sorta Beery Mary if you will. And, Mexican or not, my beer of choice is Tecate. It's delicious.
When it comes to fruit/beer combos, Belgian Lambics are the worst. Belgian beer is mostly horrible to begin with (Chimay is ok - just) and then they add fruit, presumably to hide the awfulness of it. They don't clean the kegs between brews so it all tastes of autolysed yeast covered by mashed fruit. Mmmm - banana beer...
The Germans have a couple evil concoctions - one 1/2 and 1/2 beer w/ Coke™, the other with beer and lemonade. Both are positively horrible.

Michelada's (as they are known in the ******** regions of Mexico) are a pretty common cocktail for the Mexican culture. I did a lot of bar hopping in Puebla, and most of the people I drank with would drink these as a 'hangover cure' like Americans do with Bloody Mary's. Most of them would add the oysters for 'taste'. As to why Bud is getting on the michelada bandwagon? It's not rocket science, with the explosion of the Hispanic communities in this country. Market what you know will sell. Kinda reminds me of the Corona craze in the late 80's. I used to hit the Mexican border towns for my liquor runs, and I could pick up a 12-pack of Corona's for $6. Then the college yuppies started buying them for their Spring Break getaways, and the next thing you know, the $6 case went up to $12 and higher.
MSN had an article on this craze:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9570874/
The article does answer where the name comes from:
Even the meaning of its name is subject to debate. But most agree it comes from “mi chela helada,” Mexican slang for “My Cold Beer.”

I still don't understand the corona craze, that is just not a good beer.

I think it si the same as the old Coors Craze, It could only be found in limited areas. That made for a high demand. I still wonder if they make Strohs. I miss the home town beers.
