Hey guys ! I'm picking up a medium SFE tonight, I'm gonna QT him. So far, so good with the tank, as you can see in my previous thread. I removed the glass tops, and I have the egg crate stuff from Home Depot. I was wondering what you guys suggest I should put on top to hold it down-? I don't want the SFE to pop out. LOL

Hey Hef ! Does your eel always stay in the PVC, or does he try to dig different holes-? I like the idea with the hose in the PVC, Harley. Flushing it out
Mine hasn't ventured to make/dig different holes. It stays to the pvc, and when it comes out, it'll poke it's head through the rock, but go right back to the pvc. No digging at all.

my SFE has 3 rocks he likes to hang out around. he has dug out all of the crushed coral under the rocks, its like the vietkong in there. he will pop out from multiple places, or even come out of the middle of the rock when i put squid in the tank. but he doesnt come out and free swim much, as my damsils are VERY curious about him.

I have 100lbs of LR in a 60g tank and stretches the length of the tank. Frosty has made tunnels throuout the rock and really doesn't need to leave the safety of the rock. He does poke is head out, but not much more that I have seen. I have added lights and he may not like the extra light.

Hey guys ! I got my SFE, last night. He's in the QT. I don't know how long I'll keep him in there, he's going crazy. I just fed him a silverside, with no problems. I was wondering is it normal for them to open their mouth/breath every second-?

Could you get a vid up? As far as I know (which isn't a ton about eels, though that will change in a couple months
), he sounds fine, that is how they breath, by opening their mouth and literally are gulping water through their gills. The rate does sounds a bit high though. Is it a complete cycle every second, or mouth open one second, close one second, etc?

Hey Aqua ! I would say, mouth opened one second, closed the other second. Its swimming all over in the QT. I'm thinking of letting him into the display -? How could I post a video-?

I remember your SFE was smaller right? I've seen small SFEs that are the extremely active at the LFS as well. Not sure if it was from space stress from the small holding tanks or just something small snowflakes do?
How big is the QT and what's in there? If no one else chimes in, shoot an email off to the guys at wet web media
To upload a vid, save the file from your camera to your computer, sign up at photobucket.com, then upload the video and post the links just like you would for a pic.

My SFE is small, about 12 in long, medium size. The QT is a 20 gallon long tank. I might post up a video later, thanks !

I would say the breathing sounds pretty normal if it is open one second, then closed the next, it will slow a little when he settles in...I may have missed it, but do you have some hiding places in the QT? Even in QT he needs a cave or somewhere to chill.

I have a PVC in the QT. He is doing well. I think he is unsettled, cause he doesn't stay in the PVC, he swims all around. I'll check him out when I get home from work. Thanks KJR

I would throw a rock in there - doesn't have to be big. But something where he will feel more hidden.

Hey guys ! He's doing well, I guess he had to settle in.

How often should I feed him -? 3 times a week

I fed mine every other day typically, they can certainly go twice a week too...Mine's favorite seemed to be table shrimp, but he ate squid, scallops, silversides and so on. I had him trained where I used to open the top and lay a piece of shrimp just overhanging the glass and he would come out of the water and grab it, my Porky Puffer would get so mad trying to get it, it drove him nuts
