Whats to hot for a reef?

You may run into a few problems with some of the more delicate corals, but IMO and IME stability is key. If you can't get temps below 82, then keep them stable at 82. It will be much easier on the animals - someone correct me if I'm wrong.

If you keep adjusting your heater and the temp still rises to 82, you may have a sticking heater.
If it's light and pump induced heat, you might want to consider a chiller.
82 is ok, but if you're at 82 now, July is going to be an issue.

82 is my limit. If you are at 82 with no heater, it WILL increase this summer.
What equipment do you have?
Can you post your tank specs and livestock list?
Do you have a canopy?

Remove the glass cover. I thought I would never run my tank without a glass cover, but I was having temp problems, so I took it off and the temp dropped a degree or two. Since I wasn't sure that could really make a difference, I put the glass top back on and sure enough the temp went back up, that made me a believer. I still have to use a small fan pointed at the surface during the summer months. Just my opinion, that worked for my tank.

You are fine if the temp stays below 86 degrees F and does not fluctuate more than 2 degrees in a 24 hour period :)

by the way when people say if it fluctuates more than 2 degrees in a 24 hour period it can b harmful, i wouldnt really pay attention to that the fish will not feel the tank go from 79 to 82 in 2 hours let alone 24. just try an keep it from fluctuating much thats all. my tank has always gone from 79 at night to 83 in the day within 12 hours and all my stuff is great.
mine stays at 108 degrees, dont see anything wrong with my fish they do tricks they swimm all day upside down.
